changing exhaust flappers (land or sea)
This may be a silly question, but, can I replace my exhaust flappers (aka shutters) with the boat in the water? Or must it be done out of the water? I presume the answer is it depends if they are above or below the water line? I didnt have a tape measure, but I estimated, mine are 1" above the ...

Re: sea water pump troubleshooting 7.4L
The challenge is on my 1997 233 you cannot see where the sea water pump intake hose connects to the transom, mostly because the power steering rack is on top it. I have heard it is really hard to get clevis pin out of steering arm. [youtube]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mn6L8Fy0hxk&list=PLAtC1...

Re: 7.4 LX MPI 1997 not starting
Thanks for all the input. The question remains how did ignition coil go from working in September to a fat swollen rusted mess in April? I can only guess that snow melt leaked through winter tarp and dripped onto coil? Boat is stored outside with a custom fit winter tarp. FYI when I launched it over...

Re: sea water pump troubleshooting 7.4L

Re: sea water pump troubleshooting 7.4L
Water was not even reaching the thermostat. Havent checked it but highly doubt I messed thermostat up. I am now pursuing hypothesis that there was an air leak in the sea pump assembly. Took sea water pump all apart. Impeller blades were seemingly half one way and half the other. Was not impressed wi...

Re: sea water pump troubleshooting 7.4L
Not sure yet. Of course it is possible. I infer from your question you think it sounds more like the thermostat? Other than upside down, (which I am not sure is even possible) how would one do this replacement incorrectly. I bought the Mercruiser OEM kit at the marina. Used the new cork ring gasket ...

sea water pump troubleshooting 7.4L
I tried to make two preventive maintenance steps before launching this year. (1997 233 Boat sits all winter in NY.) 1) SEA WATER (RAW WATER) IMPELLER 2) THERMOSTAT I have done the impeller twice before so this was my third time. I do it every two years although impeller looks like new after two year...

Re: 7.4 LX MPI 1997 not starting
Only needed ignition coil in addition to the cap and rotor. Started right up. Will launch next weekend. Better late than never.

Re: 7.4 LX MPI 1997 not starting
Update, new cap and rotor not enough. Boat ran perfect last fall. Have new ignition coil and ignition control module on order. Hoping I wont need to use the module because the little bitty screws that hold it on are rusty round nubs.

Re: 7.4 LX MPI 1997 not starting
News flash- Distributor cap and rotors do not last 7 years in upstate NY even under limited hours at low rpms.
Lets see how far back I need to go. MIght need module and or coil.

7.4 LX MPI 1997 not starting
Went to the ramp to launch for the season and for maybe the first time ever in 7 years, the boat wouldnt start. It turned over nice and fast, but just that dry cough sound. I had added 15 gallons of new gas and a little bit of the blue dry gas stuff on the way to the marina. I dont believe the probl...

Humminbird Depth Finder circa 1997
My 1997 233 has a Humminbird HDR200RM depth finder that displays but the numbers just jump around. Finally figured out that is because signal wire is not connected to transducer and transducer is messed up/busted. I can get the Humminbird Boat Angled Transducer XAP-6-16 online. Has anyone recently h...

Re: Bilge pump squealing but not ejecting water
All testing was done on the trailer, on land, with the engine off. Turns out squealing sound was apparently due to pump sucking air as baktasht suggested as the pump works normal in bucket. I am going to leave as is and keep the old made in USA pump motor for now. I have the "new" made in ...

Bilge pump squealing but not ejecting water
I have a 1997 233 which I am launching this weekend. I have had it 7 years with little to no problems. I needed to replace some gauges, redo some vinyl and clean up the engine compartment this spring in addition to all the normal summerization steps, hence my late launch. I decided to test the bilge...
