How well do the Bearing Buddy hub inserts seal without the guts?

Post by thunder550 »

I have Tie Down axles on my trailer with the SuperLube hubs or whatever they are called, where there's a zerk fitting on the end that pumps grease to the inner seal, through inner bearing, then through the outer bearing. I have some cheap grease caps on there that I bought from Amazon, that have the small rubber insert so I can access the zerk fitting without pulling the caps off. Been getting a little bit of water inside the caps when I dunk the trailer and trying to figure out a way to keep that from happening.

I have a set of Bearing Buddys that I can't use as intended due to the style of axle I have. I was thinking though, the nice solid stainless steel body with the guts removed and a bearing bra covering the end might be better at keeping water out than the crappy grease caps that are on the trailer now. I tried putting the bearing bras on the current grease caps but they are too big.

Anyone done this or know if it would work ok?

I removed the snap rings and guts from one of them, pretty simple to do.

This is what's on there now. Really thin metal that bends easily, and I'm questioning how well the rubber plug seals.

Really you shouldn't have to keep pumping grease in there. If the beating is properly packed and sealed bit much of a need to do much more. Do you really could put a plain ole cap over it if you wanted to. Then if you feel like pumping more grease in it swap covers gut that time being. Or just buy the proper caps? I never had issues with them. Nauti is our trailer expert.lol

We had an Eagle, really solid trailer. So we did the most logical thing possible and upgraded to a trailer with what turned out to be a pretty sketchy history that included very litlte maintenance.

Umm, I think it's more than a couple of fingers.

My beatings are properly packed, just did them

I posted the same question over on THT and someone said the bearing buddy bras don't seal well and like to fly off on the road sometimes. I think I'll just keep what I have and check them every couple of trips, and if the grease looks bad then repack gut that time :P

Try just replacing the rubber plugs, I've had to do that almost every year
