Rubber back carpet issues

Post by Big Block Power »

I know some of your boats are New and don't have this issue but some older ones do. My black rubber on the back of my carpet is coming off and leaves a black powdery mess on the floor of the boat. So I heard of this tip from another guy that I'm still working on getting him on this site. He used this rubberized elastomeric roof coating that he heard from another forum. So I used it on my little carpet walk through pieces first. So far so good. So I just did the bow and the cockpit ones now. I'm not done with the cockpit.the first coat has alot of bleed through but the second coat covers really good.
If this doesn't work I'm putting in teak looking seagrass marine carpet. Plus this carpet gets really hot compared to the Gray one I had in my 200. So it might be gone anyways.

Honestly I don't have that boat anymore. But if I did or had another I would use it again.
Or like I'm going to do switch over to sea dek.

BB, what kind of prep did you do with the old carpet? I have this issue with mine (black
back-side coating flaking off). Always heard it was a bad idea to power-wash the black
backing off the carpet, but it seems like it would be better if I could get as much of the
old stuff off as possible. Do I need the 5-gallon bucket?

And, who was the guy you heard about this from? Were you convincing him to
buy a Cobalt, or did he already have one, and you were recruiting for the site?
(hoping for another good story).

The stuff went on really easy. Really just brushed some of it off stiff brush then put this stuff on and let it dry. Like I said in a thread I would have used black instead of white.

Me no good story here. It was on another site. So I ran with it and it worked fine. I tried the stuff in the Commercial that they put on screens in a bottom of a boat. But the stuff I got was old and hard to use and seemed like it was a heavy oil based product like tar and wouldn't use it again.

Yes that's what I tried. It had a very bad oil base to it and I thought it might turn the white hull black. But my container from the store must have been pretty old because it came out thicker than tar.

Next time BB, just say you went with white so it would match the floor. 😝
