Fuel Injected/Catalytic Converter Engine Storage

Post by notstock4long »

I was doing some looking around on what I could do with to protect my engine over the winter (new generation VP), since I thought the standard fogging technique might not be a good idea with all the modern equipment on these engines. Turns out VP put out a service bulletin regarding this. I would think this applies to Merc engines as well, although maybe not 'officially'.

Basically, they say to run a mixture of 50:1 gas:2-stroke oil, with a stabilizer, through the engine, rather than injecting a fogging oil, to protect the internals from corrosion.

Has anyone done this? With the fuel pump right on the engine, it shouldn't be hard to disconnect the intake fuel line and run a line into a gas can with the mixture. If anyone has done it, any idea what fitting size/tubing size it takes?

Here's a link to the bulletin:

Yep, I just got a separate little gas van from West marine ($) that I keep mixed gas in. Goes pretty easy, but the engine smokes a bit. I don’t recall the fittings, but it wasn’t difficult.

Check out prebuilt one at the link above a little pricy at $100

Basically it is a 3/8th hose line and the appropriate fittings

Wow, and that $100 doesn’t include the gas tank!

Agree but a good mock up for what you need. The swivel cap is the hard part to find

Looks like the swivel cap may be part of the tank (not included) - https://www.amazon.com/Moeller-Ultra3-P ... B000S5U0VG

.

I know marine tech's who take the fuel filter off and fill this up with that mix for fogging.
Thoughts?

You certainly don't need much. That would probably do it, but you'll have a smoky start to next year's boating season (when it may be harder to start the engine anyway).

I have heard that running a cat fury can hurt it....so I am hesitant to consider that method.

Swivel head fitting would look similar to this but have a head that swivels

I forgot I had even made this thread!

I ended up picking up some 3/8" fuel line. I removed the fuel line at the fuel pump assembly, stuck the new line on, with the other end in a gas can with 50:1 mix, and ran the engine. Getting the original fuel line to break loose from the fitting was a pain, but it was pretty darn simple beyond that.

What have you guys with the closed cooling systems done on the fresh water side? I purged the fresh water with the plunger, then dumped antifreeze in until it came out the water pickup on the out drive. I figured that would force any remaining water out. I'm pretty sure that it isn't even necessary, but it just seems to simple not to do anything. I was still paranoid though, and picked up a small heater made for keeping the engine compartment above freezing.

For our 2005 (non-cat) Merc, we winterize the same way our dealer does....

—pour stabilizer in the gas tank

—Unscrew fuel filter and pour an oil mix into it. Screw back on and run engine to coat cylinders.

—After engine is run for five minutes to allow thermostat to open when at operating temp (150-160 degrees), attach 3 gallon jug of 50/50 antifreeze & water 💦 & let that run thru so block is protected.

—have a $20 rider on our insurance policy which covers any freezing risk.

Btw, some folks only do the heater thing and are in for a surprise when the loss of power from the ice storm now allows their block to freeze. Nice job using the antifreeze as well, Nstk4lng.

Your not the only one. I have s bilge heater and I put it in my bilge while the boat was in the garage. Not this year though so far. I finished the insulation in the ceiling and that made a big difference in temp. So she never dropped before 40 degrees last year in there so I'm ok.

I simply use Sta-Bil in the last tank of gas, and put it away. Never ethanol gas in my tank, which I think leads to storage corrosion. Always 100% non ethanol premium. I use battery tenders, and I've never had a problem. Turn the key in the spring, and go boating..🐳🐠🐟🐡🐬🐙🦑🦈?
I never use batteries for more than three seasons, and it's always worked for me.
