Role for Volvo Penta V8-225

Post by jhnmdahl »

I was recently shopping for a Cobalt and decided on this engine after a bit of research. It appears to be essentially the same 5.7 liter engine as the Volvo V8-300, but tuned to only output 225hp and with better fuel economy cruising. It has the same low-end torque as the V8-300, however, and seems ideal for a 18-23 foot boat with dual props to take advantage of the torque and fuel economy.

I was more concerned with towing a skier or whatnot than top speed, and at about $4k less than the V8-300 but more robustly built than the V6-225 it seems a good choice for my purposes.

So, now that it's almost 3 years later from when you posted this question, how did you like the 225 hp V8, John? :D

John, as I stroll down memory lane reading older posts, I have to ask.....was your post above the very first on the site which provided the spark for Cobalt Chat to be born into cyberspace?

Ha, yeah, it was one of the first doe sure. I had never taken a test drive before ordering, but hearing it had the same torque curve as the 300hp and was fuel efficient made it easy to spend on a duo prop outdrive, a wakeboard arch, and other extras instead of peak numbers.

I seem to recall starting the forum back at work right after New Year’s, so I suspect I was still the only member at this point.

John

Edit - yep, this was post number one :)

That's awesome John. And how many hours on her today? I bet you double that number next year!
And to think that's post number 1. We might have to derail it somehow to make it feel more like home. Lol
