Well my boat spent a month at cobalt dealer getting fixed (new thermostat) and several warranty items. When I unwinterized her she motor wouldn’t get up to temp and went into guardian mode. Hence the new thermostat. Well I run boat for first time and the service indicator came back on. 😢.

I don’t know what to do. My boat has had that dang indicator on since I bought it. Engine temp looked fine. Oil pressure looked fine (I think under 60). Pleanty of gear lube in Reservior. I wish dealer was not 2 hrs away.

I'm going to add one of these to my boat. Slideracer mentioned it.

Sheesh AJ.. We call that "come back" in the auto industry. And yes the marine industry is very .....lets just say relaxed in there hop to it some times, but as Boats are more expensive than cars through all year ranges you deserve to get it resolved. Especially your 3rd time!

Smart craft systems with the smart craft gauge package have mode and buttons to display code codes. If not yes you need a scann tool . There are cheap readers but they will just to give you beeps to decipher. (that's fine too)

Call them and find the closest auth merc dealer (doesnt matter if they have a Bayliner logo) And lets get some new eyes on the issue. You can seek reimbursement if the current dealer doesn't wow you back immediately, or come pick it and actually water test it this time.

Keep us posted pal.

Don’t know if this will work as my setup is Volvo, but it is worth a try.

Remove the safety lanyard from the kill switch.

Turn the ignition to “on” don’t crank the engine.

Using something small immediately push the button on the safety lanyard in 5-6 times. You will get the normal “double beep” you get at startup when you have pushed it enough times.

Turn the ignition to off, and reconnect the lanyard.

This should have cleared all the codes in the ECM.

Couldn’t get my boat to fire a while back and showed a coms fault with the ECM. This fixed it and I haven’t had a problem since.

Like I said mine is Volvo, so it might not work, but you never know. You might get lucky.

I think you need to make all the reset pushes within 20 secs of turning the key to “on”.

Update. I think dealer put in the wrong thermostat. 140 degree vs 160 (correct one). Sadly I must drive 4 hr round trip tonight to drop it off as they said they were too busy to pick it up. Let’s jope this is it

That would do it if the code was for engine temp not reaching criteria..

Plus the 4 hours to pick it up.. sheesh. Have them water test it and mention you'll be back for your " courtesy winterizing service "

Appreciate the discussion. I had my new 4.5 cut out at idle while waiting for the bridge, after some time at cruising speeds. Suspect it may have been temp issue also; only saw about 145 F on the digital gauge, but it may have gotten higher temporarily. I will have the code checked.

Sorry to re-hash the topic, but may also benefit some others.

So on July 1 I took my boat back in to the dealer to get it fixed as the service soon indicator was back on after using it for 20 min the prior day. Today found out the root cause of my issues - a clogged fuel pressure regulator. We suspect it is paint related. The the inside of the part has paint on it. Supposed to be pressure of 40 and was in the mid 50s. So have to wait a couple weeks till part comes in 😢

BBP was a big help on getting addition information from Merc for me....he has spies every where
