Big Block Power wrote: Sat Aug 05, 2017 2:08 pm I wish Tuscany you got to drive the 380 and now that you have the 430 what you really would have to share on it. For me having both 8.1gi and 8.1gxi it's no comparison what a beast. But if I had the gi I would put a set of f6 or f7 props on it to see what it would do. It's amazing how props will change everything. The gear ratios were the same. The bad is you might hit the rev limiter.
The great thing about a bb is who cares how many people or how much gas you have its always the same. It just jumps on plane. That honestly is worth more than top end.
Who knows. I'm still looking for information on the difference between the new 6.2 380/430, and there is literally nothing out there, and no one seems to know for sure yet.
One VP rep has told my dealer that unlike the 6.0L differences, there is no physical or performance hardware enhanced difference between the engines at all, just software tuning.
If that is true, then aftermarket ECU swaps will be coming soon, and a lot cheaper..

The one thing that is evident, it planes out in literally milliseconds. Flat out goes from a dead stop to on plane RIGHT EFFING NOW on a decently large and heavy boat, and snaps your head back anywhere on the rpm scale.
On an R3 sized boat, it would have to be kind of wild..
I imagine your boat can really do some serious home cookin'!

"On an R3 sized boat, it would have to be kind of wild.."

Well now your talkin' BB's world...and he is one foot shorter than an R3!

Anyways...I'm curious too, T. There just is not alot out there on the interweb yet discussing the new engine. Saw something from BoatTest and of course a little on the Cobalt site. Keep us posted on your findings as you continue to use it.

If the engines truly are the same, then I would assume the 380 would have all of the physical hardware improvements in place. Heads would have to flow better to make a 430 etc. If so, that would make the $10,500 "ECU" upgrade on the 430 the biggest option RIP OFF on the list. The props are slightly different, which makes sense because I think most people may simply equate a few more top end MPH with power.
I'll keep asking and get to the bottom of it all. ;)

im sure there are internal differences--head/compression; stroke; forged vs stamped or molded to handle higher hp application.

According to my dealer it's exactly what you said that the physical engine is exactly the same it's just the variable timing that makes them different.

You're right about that BBP. It is THE number one thing we watch out for now on the lake as those things turn on a dime and will turn right in front of you. Glad kids have to at least have a boating license to ride one here in PA. The police & Coast Guard are strict about checking and monitoring those "mosquitoes on the lake". 8-)

My brother and I grew up on the GTX models which are still my favorite. Such a flat wake for skiing too. Every time I ride his now I finish by saying..."I gotta get myself one of these!" Man are they fun.
I can't stand that. 14 yr old kids going 70 MPH with no regard for right-of-way. Drives me insane. My kids will learn by sail and by oar before they touch any power.

Also, this just in:
