Oil level check dipstick seated?

Post by Mrobertson37 »

Changing oil on 2009 volvo penta 8.1 gi. Had dealer service last year, oil level high with dipstick seated, oil level correct without seating dipstick. I’ve always seated dipstick when checking oil on cars and heavy equipment, but normally there is not an inch of difference when dipstick is seated. What is the correct procedure for checking oil on this engine, fully seated?

So glad you found us Mr37.

Sounds like your dealer may have over serviced the oil.

Your dipstick reads correctly while fully seated.

Any pics of your Cobalt?

And welcome aboard mate!

Needs to be seated.

Your engine takes 9 qts of oil with the filter being changed.

Probably any dealership can do that for you.

Better check again! Did you pump all your old oil out? Big blocks in both Volvo and Mercruiser use the exact same amount with filter...9 qts. When you checked the oil after putting 7 qts in, had you run the engine yet?

What method did you use to drain the oil?

used oil extractor that screws on dipstick tube. warmed up engine prior to extracting old oil. had engine running after oil change. 7 qts to much

Yes not sure what year they changed oil pans. But that's the same way I pump mine out and it's been 6 qts every year and the new oil looks perfectly clean. I think they changed them maybe when they went to the cartridge style oil filters?
