Engine Compartment Fire Extinguisher

Post by samuri33 »

Hello Friends,
I need your help! I've been chatting with BBP about the proper mounting position of my Firebox automatic fire extinguisher in my engine compartment. I have a 2004 262 that came with the Fireboy. The bracket is mounted just in front of the engine, just off center to the starboard side. The bracket is there, but the extinguisher was out of the bracket. Now that I have the extinguisher inspected, I need to install it in the proper position with the head in the right orientation. Can someone with a early 2000's 262 or 263 with the fireboy snap a pic and share with me which way to reinstall this puppy? Many thanks in advance.

Here it is on my 252, I assume they’re the same.

That's how mine is situated or pretty close to it.

I like this idea of an installed fire system.
What kind of volume are you getting for your engine compartment?

Check your instructions. When I installed my Fireboy it recommended that the new "clean" non-haylon system be mounted vertical instead of horizontal.

IMHO, I’m not a fan of highlighting a Fire extinguisher front and center. (but beauty is in the eye of the beholder). I prefer the engine to take center stage.

More importantly though, I normally see Fireboy extinguishers mounted on the forward or aft bulkhead....and ironically even some of those (depending on the model) aren’t mounted correctly as they are supposed to be mounted vertically.

From the Fireboy installation manual....

“Cylinders should be handled with care, removed from their boxes, and mounted at once on the forward and aft bulkheads. Mount as high as possible in the protected area. Mount the cylinders in a vertical position only, do not tilt or mount horizontally!”

The legacy CG series are allowed to be mounted 90 degrees from vertical but still on either bulkhead....

”Mounting up to 90° from vertical is permissible
 Install on the forward or aft vertical bulkhead of the engine compartment as near
to the centerline of the vessel (keel) as possible.”

Current CG series went back to a vertical installation.

Is this a system you can mount in any boat?

Yes it can be used in any boat. I also have a fireboy extinguisher mounted in my engine bay and would like to have it inspected before next season. Where did the original poster have his bottle inspected?

is there a chart available which indicates the cubic feet of each model? Planning to install one of these in the spring.

Sorry I wasn't more clear. I'm wanting a chart for Cobalt boat models and the Cu Ft of the engine compartment (bilge). I figured if someone had a chart it would help everyone. If no chart but someone knows the Cu Ft of a 240 I"d love to hear from you.

"Cu Ft of the engine compartment"

Measure l, w, and h. Then multiply all three.
