Coolant mixing with Power steering fluid

Post by kimbrow »

2015 cobalt Volvo Penta 300
Whenever I turn the wheel, fluid squirts out the little hole in the cap to the reservoir. Figured out that coolant is somehow getting into the power steering fluid causing it to overfill. Fluid looks kinda “milky” orange . Any ideas of where that could occur?

Hey kimbrow. So glad you found us.

Sounds as if your power steering cooler is leaking. That looks like rust. The cooler is normally located on the rear of the engine.

Any pics?

And welcome aboard mate.

My boat had that when it was new-- 2016 R3. I noticed it when I was checking the levels after day one. The body of the tank is common between power steering and coolant, but there are 2 separate chambers. There was a known bad seal/gasket/design and caused the mix. The entire coolant tank will need to be replaced, plus both systems flushed and filled. That's what mine took and it was exactly the same as your pic. Kind of a Salmon colored mess. I was under warranty at the time and the dealer knew what it was by verbal description. It's a known issue on those years.
