Approximate Tongue Weight of R6

Post by Ohio River Ryan »

Does anyone know the approximate Tongue weight of an R6? I realize options and trailers will affect this. Just looking for approximate.

Tongue weight is entirely dependent on how you configure your trailer.

An R6 weights 5800lb dry, and with a full tank of gas (60 gallons) and a few little things like an anchor would be 6300lb plus. Add your trailer weight (guessing 1400 lb?) and you can ballpark 7700lb total weight being towed. If you configure your trailer for 10% tongue weight, that's 770lb.

Note that Americans tend to go 10-15% tongue weight, while Europeans often shoot for 5-8% (but drive more slowly with trailers).

On my R5 my tongue weight is 600# with an estimated total of 6500#.

Boats tend to have lower tongue weights than travel trailers because the axles are closer to the rear of the trailer to account for the fact that you have the heavy weight of the engine back there. Because of that axle placement, the tongue weight can be lower on a boat trailer in order to keep the center of gravity forward of the axles.

I would agree that 770# is probably in the ballpark based on mine.

Thank you both. Your calculations are pretty much what I expected. I do believe mine may be a little lower because my boat sits back pretty far on the trailer and the trailer has a long tongue.

A tongue weight scale might be useful.
