Cobalt 226 Repower Question

Post by Skiingstrongman »

Does anybody know the maximum horsepower for the 2000 226 hull? Might be looking at a repower. Ran into some issues this weekend and it's not looking so hot going to price out repair versus repower. It's my father's boat and trading up isn't an option he's looking to ride this one out.

They put a 8.1 in them. So I'm sure you could put a 8.1gxi or 496ho both have 425hp mine is 375hp
On eBay full set up drive and engine for $15k
How big is this budget.
Going from a 5.7gxi to a 8.1 is a big jump in cash. Only 55hp more.

So what happened to her? Suck in water? Over heat? Hit something?

How much heavier is the 8.1 than the 5.7? Seems like the 5.7 may simply be a better fit for a smaller boat like that.

I think he cracked the block from what I could research. I haven't gotten my hands on it to look. Opened up the oil and it was way over filled and looked to be filled with water. He has a 5.7 280 in there now. He's looking at going to the 6.2 380. He's going to stick with the Volvo, pretty set on that. We're going to do some tinkering to see if it's something else since at this point you can't make it any worse.

The other day when we were out he was having some issues getting it out of the hole but nothing major. Then on the return trip he opened it up and as soon as we hit a no wake zone and he throttled down there was a noticeable skip and vibration going on.

Boat has been paid in full since day 1 so budget is probably not a deal breaker.

The new 6.2 is a nice set up. Not sure how much work it would be to go too the new style engine. The 6.2 320hp version prob work easier. If it's water in the oil he may just have a head gasket or exhaust manifold gasket or manifold bad.
the bb only weighs just over a hundred pounds more than a sb. Just googled it I couldn't remember. I know my 220 doesn't sit in the water any more or much more than my 200 did granted it's longer. The 5.7gxi in my last 220 did very good I wouldn't hesitate to go back to that.It had great mid-range.I think it still ran low 50s. The 226 had a faster hull too.

Wow, that 5.7L Volvo 320 looks like a steal.

Did we get a chance to tinker yet? Another question I have is how easy does there shifter move? Mine seems sticky and a bit firm. I'm thinking the shift cables are going. I push the neutral button in and it's easier? Not to hijack your thread it's just you have a boat close in age to mine.Thanks.

Tinkering with no luck yet. Off to the Volvo mechanic this week to see if he might have better success diagnosing. Then we'll go from there to figure out best options.

Shifter moves okay. No issues there.

Did you have any success with the muffler plate?

Nope.I haven't tried too hard lately.I just listen to my wife whine about the whistle then go faster so it quits.lol
I sold my props they were rebuilt and I don't think they were holding the water very good so I'm going to almost new ones.working on deals so I have replacements with in a week or so. Have vacation. Going out tomorrow then pulling them off.

The final verdict was a massive crack in the block. It's not salvageable. My father is having surgery so he's going to hold off until the spring to make a decision.

I bought my boat with a cracked block from freezing. It was the second time the guy let it happen (duh) so the motor only had 30 hours on it. All the components were good and I had to have everything switched over to a new block bored 30 over. New pistons, rings, bearings, bushings, seals, oil pump, machine work, head work, ect. It was MUCH more cost effective than ordering a new long block. If your going to upgrade though, obviously it wouldn't work. Just a thought...
