Trim not responding on plane
Trim not responding on plane
I took my 23 CS22 out last night (second time ever, woo!). Kind of a big issue occurred where I couldn't get responsiveness out of the engine trim control while on plane. I would throttle down with trim all the way down, then get on plane, try to adjust the trim up a bit, and nothing. If I held the up button long enough, it would maybe start responding, almost like a very laggy computer. There was no telling what it would do though. I would hold it down for 10 seconds trying to get it to go up, then give up and release, then seconds later it would shoot up to 60% or 40% or somewhere random. I have the VP 240 engine.
Seems like kind of a big deal if I cant trim properly while under way... Anyone dealt with this before? Does this sound like a warranty issue?
Thanks!

Hey mnsalt..
Trimming up under power is the hardest work your hydraulic rams endure as you know.
As the thrust is pulling the drive in. It appears your hydraulic pump is weak.

Re: Trim not responding on plane
Does the trim work when you are not on plane? I think first I would check the fluid level and bleed the system -- bleeding is easy just run the trim up/down @10 times, system is self bleeding. I had similar issues with my R5 when I first bought it - topping off the fluid and bleeding resolved it. Also, check for leaks, if you are seeing any sheen on the water around the back of the boat, you probably have a bigger problem.

Yes, it works not on plane. Ok I'll try bleeding the system, just run it up and down 10 times before taking off from the dock, and then go about as usual and see if it makes a difference? What kind of fluid do you need (left my manual on the boat...!)?billk2632 wrote: ↑Sun May 05, 2024 8:14 am Does the trim work when you are not on plane? No I didn't know that, im a boating newbie. It's nearly a brand new boat, so just seems strange the pump is weak. Does this seem like a warranty issue?

Yo buddy! Back at you!
Everything is good as unpredictable weather pauses the start of boating. As everywhere right.
Can’t wait to hear your next endeavor.!

Most definitely a warranty issue. Have them fix it and enjoy that trim up and down on demand.

Re: Trim not responding on plane
If the fluid is pink is is Dextron ATF, if clear it is power steering fluid. Either is fine, just top off with what is in it - also check level with drive trimmed down. On your boat the trim pump and reservoir is outside the boat and side of drive, you cannot check fluid with boat in water.

Re: Trim not responding on plane
Just realized your boat is a 2023 - still in warranty I assume. In that case I would only try the bleeding which is really running the trim up/down about 10 times. Past that I would let the dealer handle it as warranty.

Re: Trim not responding on plane
Thanks. Dumb question. Would running it up and down that many times drain the battery? Is that a good time for using the “combine” position on the battery control? (I don’t know what the combine is for but I assume it’s to use both batteries for when you’re worried about draining one?)
Re: Trim not responding on plane
It shouldn't drain the battery.
The combine on the battery switch is kind of like an emergency start thing - if one of your batteries is dead, it will combine the batteries so you can get the engine started.
