Formula 370SS with twin Ilmor 7.4's

Post by tgrace98 »

This popped up today in my daily email from boat test. I wish Cobalt would jump on board with the Ilmor engines. They get pretty good numbers out of a 16,000lb boat.

Very enjoyable! Great seeing the 7.4 in is original configuration, and making great power. How about the oil filter tray.. Brilliant!

Ilmor manufactures a really nice product as does Formula. A match made in heaven. 👌🏼

ok, I'll play devils advocate here. Aftermarket support is going to be minimal, that oil filter orientation is terrible, even with the tray, and maintenance/parts availability is going to be limited. The engineering looks top notch, but they need to get in bed with more than just Formula to get traction on taking any measurable market share in the gas stern drive sector. Heck, even Volvo is lacking in certified service centers on inland lakes, as is parts cost/availability, and aftermarket support. Pairing with GM was a smart move, but I'd be hesitant buy one at this point.

Yeah, dealer network is not developed yet, but if I ever bought a Formula, I’d be all over the Ilmor.

+1. A 310br with 2 of these would be a fun ride!

Really I rather see them using the 8.1 block then the 7.4. I looked at there website about a year ago. I can't remember what they all have cooking. I know it was cool. Still merc 520 for me!

I looked on formula’s site and they don’t offer the 7.4 on the 290 or 310br. Boo. I’d still do the VP 6.2’s on those then

I did however see you can put 2 400R outboards on a 310.

Those diesels are super quiet!

Where is Matt? Did you guys notice who's platform that Oxe is? So who has driven a automatic trans car when it was new? It was nice and tight. Now after maybe let's say even a year how was it? Not so tight even going from rev to drive. Why well if you don't come to a complete stop those clutches slip. This is a cool idea in a drive but I will tell you if you go from rev to drive all the time like they where it will have issues and not be so tight. This is our future. Belt drive too. Yecks. Keep a spare with you.
