Big auction gone bad

Post by jhnmdahl »

If you're the world's premiere auction house holding a live auction for a one-of-a-kind collector car in English, probably best to speak English properly while auctioning off the car (notice the big jump down in price right around 2:50). Too bad YT wasn't there to help them:

That's horrible. And it didn't meet the reserve even. That's bad. So then who was bidding 60 million dollars.

Sooo many things have gone wrong here. Only thing worse than losing your bidder is losing your money, and then not having the grace or experience to get back or start over. He did both. Wow. Not what you would expect at Sotheby's.

I suspect the guy selling was there as a favor to someone, it's hard to say. I never was a fan of Sotheby's or Christy's style of English Auctioneers chant. We always say what we have and what we want., and it keeps you on track. A chant is like a statement and a question. "I have 60, now 70." That is the basic of basic. But the English style is they chant what they have bid over and over. BORing....

And it doesn't even sound like a real highbrow English accent to me. If he was faking it and trying to sound real, and then loses his place and then loses his bidder, he panicked. It's easy to see he had no clue who was in or where he was, and he was holding out hoping someone else would come in. If I was the buyer in that situation, I would have hit it when hes at 17 million and saved myself some coin!

To go from 70 to 17 is a Colossal mistake, and then once he got there he just hung out on 17 and never moved. Its likely he saw the expression of the guy that was at 70 million, realizing something was wrong, and lost his money and his bidder. The instant that happened he should have stopped and let the announcer make another speech while he regrouped, but instead he hammered and hammered and got deeper and deeper.
