Volvo quick drain

Post by Chrispval »

Hey fellow cobalt owners. I have 2018 R3 with the volvo 350.
I pulled her out of storage to start doing some preseason work and upgrades. With the temps dipping to 29 tonight, should I do anything besides pushing the quick drain on the volvo? And lowering drive to drain any water ?

Na you should be fine with just that.
Did you fire it up already after it was winterized.

Volvo’s quick drain is cool. Plus you can rinse the bilge dust!

Yeah, had it rack stored so had to drive it to a public launch. Marina where I store only has fork trucks, no ramp

Yep quick drain is all you need to do! I’ve ran mine the past couple weeks and just push the button to drain before I put it away. Just make sure you put the pin back in before starting it back up. Ask Tuscany why? 😎

I pretty much have the same issue, so I sure hope you guys are right. My boat is floating in the slip at the moment and the temps are supposed to drop to 21F tonight. I opened up the easy drain yesterday when I saw the forecast. This will be the coldest any of my boat have encountered while in the water. I will pay it a visit tomorrow and see if I have ice in the bilge.

Rule of thumb is 24 hours of 24* to do freeze damage. You can push it lower than that with the boat wet slipped. We’ve had to bust ice with a sledge hammer off the bow through the channel to our ramp, then plow the ramp to get the boats out. My neighbor has a video I should get it. 🥶

I was not aware of that rule of thumb, thanks for sharing that, I feel much better now.

Other factors to take in mind as well.

The new Volvo motors with the quick drain are closed cooled. So even in the event of freeze damage all you are doing is putting in a new heat exchanger.

Second. With the boat being in a slip the warmer water temps will keep the surface temps on the water a bit warmer.

I want to open this thread again.
Last year, we were expecting to go to the lake a few more times in October.
With weather, family events, football tailgaiting, etc., we didn't go after first weekend in October.
I had the dealer winterize when changing all oils.
In May, we went to lake, I took a few tools to do it myself.
The battery cables where still attached, so we just had to turn the switch.
Should the cables have been removed from battery?
Second, one of the hoses on top had been removed, and a bottle of something was attached (I forgot)...I'm guessing to mist the engine with oil.
Is this necessary, and if so, can I get some more information?
Thanks.

I leave my batteries hooked up all winter and I just keep the battery charger plugged in all winter to keep the batteries charged and warm.
