Montara Surf Boss - Is this a threat to wake boats?

I was searching around Craigslist for Cobalts and this thing popped up. Comes with a standard 409HP and can be upgraded to 450HP. I haven’t been able to find any written reviews yet, but I did see an article where the company was saying that they had it cruising at 42 mph with 6,000 lbs. of ballast. I’ve had a pontoon and it is truly the minivan of the water. Great for families with small ones, but not much fun unless you spend $200,000 and hang a few 300 hp outboards off the back.

This is a blend of a pontoon and deck boat on the bottom that gives you the room of the pontoon on the top. Add in over 400 hp of inboard power like a wake boat and this sounds like it could capture some of the market. They make it sound like the finish is high end and the posts I've seen indicate that you can buy one for $115 to $120.

I would like to hear some thoughts from you folks. Is this design something that will start replacing the wake boats?

Wow. That's quite impressive for a pontoon....errr or V-toon...or whatever this hybrid is. I'm curious if it has the forward facing duo prop or is a straight inboard. Power is impressive. I could see my brother looking at one of these down in the salt water bay area of Delaware.

Thanks for sharing Motex.

It's really hard to tell - they don't have a shot of the drive ANYWHERE, but on one of the videos on their site you can see that it's a straight inboard when they back it into the water.

Interesting boat. Not attractive, but super flexible. Basically a Honda Odyssey Touring. 😂

Ok it's a inboard.
To me the surf wake looks horrible.
Can't beach it so that will hurt it some. Not a huge fan but there will be a market for it.

Had 2 honda Odyssey Vans. Drove them into the ground, but my soul didn't stir for those 11 years. I wonder how I would have felt if they had 400hp? Lighting up some kids with their fart can exhausts would have been cool.

I also wonder how that inboard set up will jump out of the water without a bunch of weight. I don't see myself leaving Cobalt for that, but I would love to see a friend buy one so I can drive it.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

I saw one up close on our lake last summer and the wake was terrible, FWIW.

I think this steals pontoon sales if anything, and not runabout sales. Reminds me a bit of when Dodge Caravan Sport editions came out - it's still a Plymouth Voyager, but dressed up a little to make it more palatable to someone who is essentially forced to buy one.

We had a Plymouth Voyager when I was a teen learning to drive - I think I earned the right to pick on them :) Every time you tried to flip the blinker on or off it felt like you'd break something. Don't even get me started on the ergonomics, or how nothing worked when it got cold, or the transmission...
