Impeller thread size?
Impeller thread size?
Anyone know the thread size/type on the impeller in the V8-380? (Impeller part number 2170045)?
Went to change the impeller yesterday, and it was not easy to remove. Dont want to muscle out to avoid scarring the soft pump metal.
The impeller is threaded, so spinning in a bolt should make it easy. Some creative googling says the Sherwood 25105 puller might work, and it is 3/4"-16 thread, but thought I'd see if anyone knew.

Re: Impeller thread size?
The impeller for the 280-G v6 thread size is 3/4 x 16 thread. I recently purchased a 4” bolt of this size for removal. It was still a little tough to wiggle out. We have different engines, but based on your recollection, it sounds like it’s the same thread size. Here’s what I purchased for my impeller removal tool. https://www.fastenal.com/products/details/18998

I just ordered the "factory" Volvo Penta impeller removal tool. When it arrives, I will document it.
It was $15. It's a bolt within a bolt.

Do you have a link Mark? I couldnt find a VP part - only a Johnson that sounds like what you describe, and the plastic Sherwood puller.mdadgar wrote: ↑Tue May 19, 2020 12:18 pmGood idea.Big Block Power wrote: ↑Mon May 18, 2020 7:25 pm Let's get some pictures and document this for future boaters. Re: Impeller thread size?
The newer Volvo engines that use impeller part number 2170045 are threaded. 3/4"-16 thread confirmed. Going to start a changing your impeller thread.

Re: Impeller thread size?
Thanks guys. I may have purchased the wrong impeller. Just found a website that used serial number to tell me exact engine number, mine is Volvo V8-300-CE-M. It then translates to the same part greenhut referenced. I'll be interested in the thread when someone starts it. Not really worried yet about how soon I replace it as it probably has only 70 hours of moderate cruising. Going to have to find newer Youtube videos.

Re: Impeller thread size?
Easiest impeller I have ever changed - with one exception. It sits TIGHT in the housing. Buy one of these:
Threads onto the impeller and allows you to pull it out. Some other impeller change suggestions...
Only use the Volvo OEM part. Some aftermarket copies are not threaded.
Impeller is only threaded on one side - be sure when you put the new impeller in that threads face out.
Lube the impeller with some Glycerin. Newer volvo impeller kits don't include the small tube.
Change the impeller when out of the water unless you have done it before and have nerves of steel. Depending on some factors, water can come pouring into the bilge if you are in the water when changing. Can plug mostly with a cloth, but easier dry...
Lastly, I would change it every year. Probably more than necessary, but if an impeller breaks into pieces finding them is a pain in the ass.

Re: Impeller thread size?
I just now was able to get to the new impeller that I ordered from www.volvopentastore.com/impellers. For Volvo V8-300-CE it said part no. 21213664.
I just clicked on the site, and it sends part no. 22307636. One site I saw said 22307636 replaces 21213664. Does this look like the same impeller?
Found another site that has them for $57.99. The impeller in my photo is the same.

Volvo V8-350-CE & Volvo V8-380-CE

It looks like the 2170045 is for the 350 and 380; 22307636 is for the 300.

Re: Impeller thread size?
I tried the same thing and ended up needing an M18x1.5 metric impeller puller for my somewhat older V8 (2015 vintage) but the same Volvo 21213664 impeller part number - see this thread:
