NO ECM DATA on Volvo 5.0 270 HP No crank no start

This isn't about my boat, but a neighbors. (I don't own a cobalt, but I figured this would be the place to be to come for advice) They said it started up fine this morning going out on the lake. They parked for a bit and went to start back up and they said it hesitated starting, but still started. Later on parking the boat again, this time when they tried to start the motor would not even turn over. They asked me if I could take a look at so I did, when I put the key in the ignition and turn to crank there is no fuel pump priming noise, no starter solenoid click, only a readout on the dash for "NO ECM DATA" the boat says that the engine has 0 running hours on it. Yes I thought it was driller that had that issue. Sorry not much help. I would hate to send you on a wild goose Chase. I think he did some kind of reset to it.

Toughest part is I didn’t hear a ignition on “audible alarm”.
Possibly no ignition switch output to your ecm relay in the engine compartment.
It will require a diagnostic process that includes determining power up locations are active.

Almost like there's a safety of some sort holding things up.

Perhaps the Kill Switch is the culprit?

Really need to start checking and wiggling some wires. You have no power going to your ecu. check under the dash. Not sure if there is a fuse panel up under your helm. Wiggle wires under the dash. Check the wires going to the starter. Make sure they are tight. Check the wires at the alt.

If i had to make a SWAG at it I'd say it's a bad connection at the helm. Did you check the wires going to the digital display?

Had the same problem. Here's the reset which I did on my 2011 242. It has never acted up since. Mine showed the same "No ECM DATA" warning.

Turn the key off.

Remove the lanyard

Turn the key on and repeatedly hit the button which the lanyard keeps retracted. It will take 10-12 times.

At some point you should here a couple of beeps. At that point turn the key off.

Reinstall the lanyard.

Now cross both all toes and fingers and try to start it.

This series resets the ECM. It should now start and run.
