Thanks for the good info BBP! My wife has a similar view on sound.
The 10” sub should give me what I want and not add too much weight. Checked the specs and the enclosure is 18lbs and the sub itself is 8lbs. Not too heavy.

Don't laugh but I'm thinking of trying one of these. Just to get a little thump. They have a built in amp.

Re: Stereo head unit upgrade
It gets good reviews on Amazon. Simple plug and play solution!
The 10” Polk sub and enclosure I am looking to build is about $85 plus the amp. I’m going to hook it up to a 5 channel amp. But if I already had an amp I would look for a mono block. Don’t know what a good one goes for used, but new the Kenwood KAC3001 is about $90 and gets excellent reviews for a marine grade amp. You might get more mileage out of a similar set-up. Something to consider.

Small correction. The amp is the Kenwood KAC-M3001. Lowest price for a new one on eBay is $80.95 with free shipping. It’s a Class D amp and super compact.

Come on BBP we are better than this, after dropping money into WetSounds speakers you know you are not going to be happy with the sound quality you get from that setup. Quick and I mean super quick crutchfield search:Big Block Power wrote: ↑Mon Feb 12, 2018 9:16 pmDon't laugh but I'm thinking of trying one of these. Just to get a little thump. 10in MB Quart Sub - $119
10in Sub Box - $60 but you could find one cheaper if you shop
Decent Mono Amp - $150
Misc Wire - $30
Yeah, its a bit more but it will sound way better. And thats not even shopping open box or used stuff on Ebay. You can find cheap used single channel amps on sale all the time, In my opinion depending on where you mount them in the boat you really dont need a marine grade amp. Ours are not and they have survived 10 years with no issues. They are tucked way back in the front storage compartment, it stays just as dry as a car's trunk.
Find a 10in sub amp combo some teenage kid ripped out of his civic on craigslist and offer him some spotted cow for it. Tons of options.
Do it right and cry once. Just my opinion.

Not sure if I'm adding a sub yet. But I have been looking at this.

Re: Stereo head unit upgrade
I have this beast just not sure I want the extra weight and loss of storage. I'm not as concerned about the sound because really in the storage compartment you really lose most of the sound anyways. Hence why I just looked at those goofy sub/ amp things. I have a 12 inch kicker box also I have a 10 box of I want to use that one it's much lighter and smaller .I'm not sure what I'll do.

Look around in the pawn shops for a good sub and amps. When these kids get short on scratch that's the first thing that comes out!

That's the amp I went with on my new setup with 6 of the 6-1/2" JLs and 1 10" subwoofer. Made a world of difference even using the stock head unit.

Re: Stereo head unit upgrade
Do you guys have any recommendations on head units that have bluetooth and USB, and also a 7 (or greater) band EQ? I'm liking the functionality of the $25 cheapo unit I bought from Amazon but with just a Bass and Treble adjustment, I can't get it to sound the way I want it. Need to be able to tweak individual frequency bands.

Re: Stereo head unit upgrade
My Sony has all of that. I can't get the usb to play music through my phone though. But really with Bluetooth you really don't need it.

Re: Stereo head unit upgrade
USB I'm just looking for the ability to insert a thumb drive.

Re: Stereo head unit upgrade
We didn't use a thumb drive but I took my old phone and loaded up spotify on it and can keep it plugged to the usb port with a charging cable in the glove box and be good to go all day. Never have to worry about charging a device and not having my boat jams.thunder550 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 15, 2018 5:18 pm USB I'm just looking for the ability to insert a thumb drive.
