All dash gauges functionally went out (but still light up)

Post by TwoBurgers »

Hey Gents,
I was out Memorial Day and had my dash gauges go out (all). When I engage the bow/anchor lights, the gauges will light up (getting power), but the function is not getting through. Even the Smart Gauge is not registering. Also, the depth sounder and temp gauges are not reading.
Given the above, do you all think the issue is with a fuse at the engine, one of the two batteries, or behind the dash?
She's a 2013 232 w/ the 350 Merc Mag MPI - about 350 hours. Batteries are a year old.
Appreciate the help!

Find the common grd block. That's where I would start. Prob one at the helm.

Well, looks like the issue is going to require the Merc Diag tool which my mechanic doesn't have. My regular mechanic stopped by the house and checked everything he knew - engine, panel, etc and couldn't find anything. But now I'm not getting any power to anything. Thinking it may be the master power switch has gone bad. The wait at the Merc shop is three weeks, so looks like by boating season is officially over. I'll report back when I am told what the issue was. :(

Well, I just heard from my local shop (Nautical Marine) - a ground wire behind the dash had broken loose from it's mount. I figure about $250 for 1.5 hours per the mechanic. For a boating bill, I guess that isn't too bad. Looks like Sunday will be good for boating on the lake. :)

Hi! Indeed you were. I will say one of my weaker skills (probably due to impatience) is my electronic diagnostic skills. I did take a look, but looking at the nest of wires behind the dash was a bit much. I just checked the boat, and all seems well now. The forecast changed - hope I can get one more day out in a few weeks.

That's awesome though glad it's fixed and you might be able to get out yet. I'm done here.
