CG enforcing kill switch law

Post by clm0fiz »

Sorry if this has been posted, but I couldn't locate it. Article says CG will begin enforcing the kill switch law as of 4/1/2021. If this does not post as a hyperlink, please let me know.

Did some reading. It applies for boats built since January 2020.
My 2003 is theoretically exempt from the law.
On my boat, the kill switch is there but I don't see how a lanyard is used with it.
I'll have to look more closely next time out.

If you have volvo I can send you a picture of mine. Never mind I read your signature. Mine is attached to the throttle! It always pulls it towards WOT😂

If I am reading the law correctly - and I may not be - it says three things:

1. Boats built before 2020 that do not have a kill switch are not required to add one.
2. All boats 2020 and newer must come from the factory with a kill switch.
3. If you boat is equipped with a kill switch you must use the lanyard, regardless of year.

If I am reading it incorrectly let me know, but based on that interpretation you would need to use the kill switch on your 2003.

Personally I clip the kill switch on myself while Katie is at the wheel. Just makes me feel safer in the passenger seat.

Just spent some time on the USCG site reading their FAQ's on the topic. Seems a little confusing in places. If your pre-2020 boat has one and it's broken or missing, you don't have to fix or replace it. But if you have one, it must be used...I know the FAQ is not the law, still searching for that scrap of digital info.

You and I read the same FAQ, I agree confusing, but that was my take away from it as well.

Lots of posts re this law on my local lake community (Lake Anna). What we've heard is it applies to tidal waters in Virginia. So, the lake is free of this nonsense. IMO it's another feel good law from our nanny state. What's next - a pressure plate on the swim platforms that controls ignition?
How many people will accidentally trigger the kill switch and cause problems when their passengers are thrown forward? Just saying...
Be safe out there!

I just got a regular email form BoatsUS which I joined for insurance. Mags and emails are extra benefit.

According to this article, and I haven't been to Coast Guard site: Section 8316 of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2021 requires a vessel operator to use ECOS on certain vessels less than 26 feet when traveling on plane or above displacement speed.

Another reason to step up to bigger boat.

There were a number of people that fell off their boats with the boats in gear this last summer at least 3 or 4 died. This was in Lake Tahoe. All were inexperienced boaters. Most were rental boats and the rental boat places have a written rule that the emergency lanyard should be engaged.

Personally, I never use them but a few of my friends started after these incidents.

I got in the habit of using a kill switch when I started boating 12 yrs ago. It’s just like a seat belt to me now. I feel like something is missing if I don’t have it on my wrist. It’s doesn’t bother me at all. Even though it’s hard to reach for another beer while wearing it. 😂😂😂
