Propeller

Post by Gcobalt222 »

Just bought a 1992 222 bow rider. 7.4 bravo one. Looking for best prop for tubing skiing and we love that top end speed!

Hey Gc.. so glad you found us.

What model 7.4 Merc and what are your RPM's at WOT (wide open throttle)? That will help in prop selection. Do you know what prop pitch you have now? Three or four blade?

Any pics of your 222?

These answers will help folks chime in for you.

And welcome aboard mate!

Choose 1. Can't have both.

In general:

4 or 5 blade props work well for fast planing and water sports.

3 blade work well for top speed.

Like mentioned above, will need more info from you to get better recommendations.

I had a 21' Bryant with a gen 5 7.4L carb engine. It came with a Mercury Mirage plus 21 (3 blade) It did OK with top end, but with that heavy engine and all passengers in the back, would not plane for crap.

Replaced it with a Mercury High 5 (5 blade) and would plane great with good midrange cruising. Lost a few MPH on the top end though.

Overall the 5 blade worked best for that boat since top speed runs were rare due to water conditions, and just going out with friends and getting on plane was much more important.

I often wonder how well that boat would have been with a Bravo 3 outdrive instead?
