No Slip Deck - Dog proof?

HI everyone. Wanted to share a couple of items I have come across while outfitting a new Cobalt in the off season. I have recently purchased my 3rd Cobalt. We boat with our a dog Tabasco - he goes every time. Tabasco is a 50 lb Vizsla. I had a 210 in 2014 and the swim platform had a very hard, non slip deck material that was truly dog proof. Several years of boating with out any dog nail damage. Our Vizsla likes to fish...no really. He sits on the back deck when not swimming and follows fish in the water. He jumps in after them when they get close enough. He hunts quite a bit during winter and fish have become his entertainment during summer months. We purchased a 2016 R5 and the swim platform had a new product on it called SeaDeck. Our dealer told us it was a new product and thought it would hold up better than what we had on the 2014 210. SeaDeck is a nice product. Cool and soft to the touch- very soft. Tabasco damaged this product in just 10 boating trips. Small nail holes were all over the decking. We replaced it under warranty mid season thinking we got a bad piece of decking only to have this happen again. If you go to the SeaDeck FAQ on the web, they no longer warranty the product against dog nail damage.

I have been researching and found what I think is a dog friendly product called plasdeck.com. They will be putting this on our new boat and I will report back but I can tell you I tested it and I think the problem is eliminated. It is a much harder surface and seems to be significantly more resilient. My guess is that it may be more slippery than the SeaDeck. However, I poked it with a dart (from a dart board) and it actually fills the whole after 30-40 minutes. Simulating normal Nail pressure from tabasco (he was very happy about this :)) did no damage to the samples. Anyhow, if you don't have a dog, or your dog is laid back, I would recommend SeaDeck. If you are getting dents in your deck, check out plasdeck.com. JK

This is very helpful, 2018R7surf. We have a 50 pound Golden Retriever who will be boating with us at times. We were considering the Sea Dek as an option to replace the carpet that is currently on the upper swim platform.

Keep us posted...with pics of course!

Try booties if you want to save your seadek.

Glad I saw this post. Was about to complete my template for the SeaDek but will hold off now. Just ordered some samples of the plasdek. My labradoodle is most likely dig his nails into anything. I think it is the poodle half that makes him nervous and he hates things on his feet, so the dog booties would just be a snack to him. I am interested in anyone’s experience with this new product, Plasdek. Thanks 2018R7Surf. 🐺

A couple of things to consider. They have diy (do it yourself) instructions but unless your really handy, I would have someone come to measure it and install - maybe at your dealer. They have installers all over. There is a chance they already have a template for your boat and they won’t have to measure. I am only doing swim deck. I did Seagrass on the inside of the boat. If I was doing inside of boat I would do snaps on the inside. I have a swim deck that goes under water and don’t trust the snaps for that. I will post pictures when done. They can also do cobalt logo or anything you want on the decking.

I did Seagrass on the inside of the boat.

How do you like the Seagrass, 2018R7Surf? Any pros and or cons you would like to pass on?

I love the seagrass. It gets hot in the bow when you anchor on a sunny day but I think it looks best and it’s very durable.

Seagrass doesn't get soggy like carpet - my favorite feature.

Tabasco is a gorgeous dog! I would like to see some pictures of the sea grass if anybody has some. Got my samples of the plasdek and I am leaning towards the SeaDek. It is appears to install easier and I feel comfortable doing it my self since I am just looking at the swim deck for now. But I’d love to chunk the carpet. I usually just go with the hard floor but the Sea grass has intrigued me. Especially if you can get snaps for it.
