What about V-drive boats that have an extra transmission/transfer case type thing to go through?

Those V-drive transmissions are much improved over our father’s era. Not as much gear whine and smoother with less racket noise. Velvet Drive produces a nice product as does Twin Disc.

A V-drive is still more efficient in delivering horsepower to the prop, losing roughly 8 percent, while a sterndrive loses about 13 percent.

Great info, thanks for sharing. Definitely interesting seeing how much power is lost just turning the various parts.

The issue with any inboard is once you get to 40mph you start running into issues where the turbulence of the water from the prop starts rattling the rudder. I was talking to the nautique dealer at the show a couple weeks back. So you can’t really drive them around 50 anyways, at least how they’re setup stock according to him.

I never heard that so that's interesting. Makes sense.

They have a supercharged 6.0 option and he said there’s no benefit because you only really get a difference in the low end performance and the 550 and 450 hp options perform the same or very close low end and you can’t get the high end benefit. It’s a $10,000 upgrade and he’s always been very up front with me so I take him at his word.

Makes sense, I don't know that I've ever seen a really fast inboard. Wake boats don't seem like they are built for speed.

Trying to think about all the fast boats I've seen (like 50mph and up), aren't they all either jet, stern, or surface drive?

Personally, I see Cobalt having issues down the road, and hopefully the acquisition and the thinkers at Malibu will help bring the company into the 21st century faster. I haven’t seen a single Cobalt on the water here in Florida..

The cut of the A series and the addition of the 30SC is a reason for optimism. Next to go should be the deck style SC Hull.
They may be selling boats today, but I think Cobalt is behind the curve of where Boating is going.
That A40 pic that I posted last week? They can’t sell it. . Rotsa Ruck with the 36 also. If I was in the market for a boat like that, I wouldn’t buy them either.

Outboard power was the reason.. no one wants an I/O, and that’s an average boat in this neck of the woods.
