Great questions. Thank you for the reply!
I used the Carter universal marine pump. It's supplying 5.5psi with no return or regulator. The whistling was only when engine was spinning, and because I had the wrong size tee for the oil pressure switch the fuel pump temporarily runs when the engine isn ...

Running rough with new carburetor and old distributor
Hey there,
I'm looking for some troubleshooting guidance on my 1994 Cobalt 220 with the 5.7L.
It has a fresh motor and many other new parts. Also still some original equipment in there that could be 25 yrs old, such as the points distributor.
Ran great all day 2 weeks ago, then the next weekend ...

Re: 94 Cobalt 220 not starting
The electric fuel pump conversion did it!
The Universal Carter Pump provides ~6psi and it starts and runs. Thanks for all the help!
Unfortunately, now I'm going to start a new topic about some other issues I noticed after cruising it yesterday. it seemed to be misfiring shortly after leaving the ...

Re: 94 Cobalt 220 not starting
Thank you for the resource! The description of fuel pump wiring there is exactly what I'm planning on doing. Parts just arrived, may get out there tomorrow afternoon to give it a shot.
Couple things though:
-How do I add pics on here?
-What type of wire connectors should be used?
-Still hoping ...

Re: 94 Cobalt 220 not starting
Thanks akorcovelos,
Great questions. The pump I ordered is a Carter inline that only outputs 5-7 psi for carburetors. I selected this so no regulator or return line is needed. I will put a gauge in the line from the pump to the carb as a quick way to avoid uncertainty in the future.

Re: 94 Cobalt 220 not starting
Maybe EFI isn’t worth the trouble after all then.
I only ran it for a few hours, maybe 4. But since the cam lobe that drives the fuel pump might be flat now I’m looking at installing a universal Carter inline marine fuel pump which puts out 5-7psi between the fuel water separator and the ...

Re: 94 Cobalt 220 not starting
This just in from Comp Cams:
"The bronze tip pushrod keeps from damaging the fuel pump lobe on this type cam. If you run a regular steel one, it can wear the fuel pump lobe off."
New question:
What is the best way of converting to an electric fuel pump setup?
I've been wanting to know this longer ...

Re: 94 Cobalt 220 not starting
Hey guys, I have updates...and more questions, lol.
While I'm stuck at the office today the service team at my marina confirmed that it does start with starting fluid and runs for a few minutes. It is not getting fuel from the tank through the carburetor like it should. They also said my boat does ...

Re: 94 Cobalt 220 not starting
Thanks guys!
Yeah, it had an edelbrock carburetor on it when I bought it and still does. I will bring starting fluid next time because it does not seem to be getting any fuel in the carburetor.
Regarding the kill switch, I’ve never seen it or a lanyard. When I had the exterior refinished last ...

94 Cobalt 220 not starting
Hey guys,
Sorry for the LONG introduction!
Hoping you can help me learn / diagnose about the issue with my 1994 Cobalt 220 5.7L Volvo Penta. It's my first boat and I've done a lot of work getting it ready for this summer, but my knowledge of boats only just began when I bought it last year. My ...

Re: 220 engine died while underway
I'm having similar issues with my 1994 Cobalt 220 5.7 Volvo Penta.
Long story short, I just put a new motor in it and had one good day out on the lake but then the following weekend it cranks over and over but doesn't start. When I removed and checked it there is spark coming through the #1 spark ...
