PSA: Cleaning Vinyl that has Fresco Chil

Post by VTENGR »

Just started going through the new owners packet for my R6 and saw this. Figured this is a good PSA because I was planning on cleaning my vinyl with either boat bling or 303.

That protects them from when it gets cleaned and turns out yellow from different chemicals. Yes it happens. Doesn't mean to me not to use a good product.

Say what? You're saying you would still use the products they say not to use? I would do what they recommend.

Yes I use them today and will continue to use them. I've seen what lift kept boats look like after years of use and it's not pretty.

You're speaking in riddles.

What does keeping a boat on a lift have to do with cleaning the vinyl? Enlighten us, what do lift kept boats look like?

So Cobalt is involved in a conspiracy against the cleaning companies to cover themselves when the vinyl breaks down?

I'm trying to understand what you're talking about.

What I'm taking about? Ok so many boats left on a lift get very dirty from all of the elements it exposed to and many don't take the proper care in cleaning them as it's not as easy to clean out as a boat that is in the driveway. An unprotected interior and exterior look like crap and dry rot much faster than a boat that has been maintained with proper chemicals. I'll put money on a protected interior lasting way longer than a unprotected interior all day long. But it's your boat so don't let me tell you what to do with it.

It could be semantics, but they were advising against cleaners not conditioners. I know for leather those are mutually exclusive. Figured the same for vinyl, no?

I'm still shaking my head for anyone advocating doing the EXACT OPPOSITE of what the manufacturer recommends.

I'm guessing this new Fresco Chil is a newer coating than what's in 20 year old boat vinyl.

I suppose time will tell how it performs.

Yeah if your boat sits on a lift and never gets used or properly maintained/cleaned it can get pretty dirty. But if you give her the attention she deserves I dont see much difference between keeping at home or on a lift.

For purposes of topic, I think I'd error on the side of mfg recommendations. So you guys think when they say dont use these products that means no conditioner as well and not just cleaners?

That's my question too! I'm ok with using mild soap + water to clean. I can see why a more harsh cleaning agent may affect the coating. However, I don't know how a conditioner would. For my car I condition the leather, maybe 3 or 4 times a year to keep it nice and supple. I'd like to do the same for my vinyl but I don't want to unknowingly cause harm.

This new material must have some kind of pore system to allow breathing to get the cooling effect??? I am just guessing but I would guess that harsh cleaners will break this surface down faster and that conditioners may clog it??? I surely wouldnt want to be the guinea pig on something like this, there's a lot of vinyl to replace on a boat.

The only reason I responded to this thread was to ask what you use on your leather? Due to all this inflation we are keeping our vehicles longer and I might actually have to spend some money to upkeep them a little better. TIA

This is what I use: and

I only hand wash my car. About every 3rd or 4th wash - depending on how dirty the interior is, I'll use the cleaner and conditioner. When I don't do that I just use a microfiber to rub down the seats to get dust & dirt off.
