Re: 263 Sea trial semi fail
It doesn't look defective to me. I would think it got hit at a prev time to cause that. I'm glad you where there to see it happen. That tech had to feel terrible. It helped him I'm sure that you saw it.

It did help the tech (that I observed it break), bbp. We were both speechless. Just looked at each other as we could not believe our eyes. It was like a cold Hershey candy bar that just "snapped" right there in front of us. Had the same sound too.
We talked about technician / customer relationships and how they would have to explain that to a customer on the phone. There is no way the customer would believe that it just "snapped" without some type of pressure/ crow bar / banging etc. The customer would be adamant that the marina pull the engine on their own dime due to the tech's negligence in breaking a perfectly good part.
Unfortunately for me, I was right there --1 foot away just holding the flashlight and watching as the tech turned the nut that goes into the steering cylinder. There really is no pressure. It just screws down into a hole. He hadn't even tightened it yet. Since I watched it happen, I can vouch that he did nothing wrong.....which means I'm footing the bill.
Oh well...everything happens for a reason. Maybe the good Lord wanted this to break here and not half way across to Canada with my family.

My wife said we just landed on that space which has that HUGE loser slide in the game "chutes and ladders" right before you cross the finish line.
That made me laugh. Slide allllllll the way down...start again.
Btw,
Rear transom plate which needs replaced (You can see where metal snapped in top left corner ):

Re: 263 Sea trial semi fail
All things happen for a reason. I don't believe in happenstance. There's a reason it broke now, in the shop, at this time of year. It's getting too cold for you to go out on a boat anyway. Who knows, there may be some huge freak storm and high wind come up that blows boats around like leaves on the grass. And there you are, snug and warm with your family safe, becoming friends with your tech as you tell tales of boating and flying. Right? So freshen up that motor, stick it back in and we'll all give you a hug at Tuscanys slumberpartyboathousechristening.

Re: 263 Sea trial semi fail
Totally agree! There will be a day or something else happens that will make you say "thats why that happened then"... Yes its frustrating and not something you want to deal with but no one was hurt and you weren't out with you family and have that happen and things be worse.Ytmsn wrote: Thu Sep 14, 2017 11:23 pm All things happen for a reason. I'm terrible about thinking it's thr worst thing ever in that moment but I do eventually get to the point where I realize things could always be worse.
Some people don't have fun boats to work on and fix and most importantly enjoy! Those people are missing out!
Good luck!

Re: 263 Sea trial semi fail
.
Rear INNER transom plate is off.
Waiting on new one to arrive next week. $300
On the EXTERIOR transom plate, the tech reconstructed the intake housing so there is now a bolt hole for the other bolt to screw into. Yay!
Again, I think she was sucking major air thru the one side of the "cover housing" that connects to the water hose leading to the raw water pump which could not be tightened down--contributing to the overheat condition.
With better access, he used JB weld again but this time used a tap and die set to install a helacoil.

Re: 263 Sea trial semi fail
What in the actual f@ck?!?
Aslan I'm sorry you're dealing with this. You have infinite patience and a great attitude. I'm certain it's contagious with people around you.
I thought zebra mussels too as I was reading this because they suck.
When the hose was twisted I thought no way that's the problem - you're sucking air somewhere. Then you find it and thread is stripped. Then that piece snaps? Just snaps? Wtf!
I'm sitting here with my jaw dropped looking your engine being yanked!
I am a patient man but I'd be losing my mind. And I have this mental picture of you saying "well I've always wanted to clean out the bilge with the engine out" and whistling as you get to it.
You are a rare breed my friend.

Re: 263 Sea trial semi fail
Thanks Liquid.
I appreciate the kind remarks, my friend.
Not sure why this is in the good Lord's plan, but it does no good for me to get frustrated. As a wiseman once said; Trials produce perseverance--perseverance produces character--and character produces hope.
Looking forward to getting her on the water --hopefully next week.

Aslan, you're getting to the end & you deserve some good luck. Maybe you should buy a lotto ticket this week.

The word is.....Merc sure ships slowly.
Waiting on that transom bracket.
Everything is cleaned up ready to go in fresh. Like the military--hurry up and wait.
Thx for asking BbP.
