Chartplotter - 2011 242

So as you can see in the picture below, when the 2011 242 was ordered with the GPS it was mounted in the location where the cubby hole is on the models that came without the GPS.

The bolt on plate is slightly different as it included a power switch for the GPS and was slightly larger than mine.

I just want to make sure that I won't get tired of looking down at it. I really haven't got a better solution for mounting at the present time and think I am headed that direction, but I want to be sure it is what I want.

The GO5 includes NMEA 2000, Bluetooth, and an AM / FM radio. With an optional amp, I could replace my aging head unit at the same time.

Thought I’d share my experience . Not sure it helps, I know we are boating different waters.
My chat plotter is mounted in about the same location. I dont mind looking down as I only look at it occasionally. I have it set for 1 mile range so I'm plotting my course a mile or more at a time. I also like that's it's down and out of my view when not needed.

Thanks Bfun that's good to know. Setting at the wheel, it looks like it will be ok and it is most convenient spot. I'm like you, I like that it is out of the way and line of vision when mounted in that location.

Looking at adding a chartplotter to my 262 right now. Finding a place to mount it is almost impossible. I am currently looking at the Garmin units. So many options though, I am almost lost. Side view, Clearview, this map, that map... ughh

I went with this one. It does not have sonar, just chart plotting. Compact and low price sold me. Not sure if they still sell them new though.
But I did find this.

If just looking for a chart plotter with no sonar or anything, what's the advantage of a standalone unit vs a tablet or phone running the Navionics app?

I've got Navionics on my iPhone 7 and while it is good, the screen is too small for my 40-something eyes. I've contemplated the option of a cheap tablet with a built in GPS, as you can use that option with Navionics as well -- no need for a data plan once maps are downloaded to the device. However, by the time you add some sort of water/weather protection to the device, a ram mount, and a power source close to the helm, a low priced chartplotter starts to make some sense. Ideally I will surface mount mine, as I am looking for a clean / factory install.

All said, I agree that Navionics on a small tablet or large device is a great option for some.

Makes sense. The HD/Tablet version is what...$50/year? Then add the tablet and the other stuff you talked about and I guess a standalone makes sense.

same here... I didn't feel like I wanted to hold onto a small hand held and try to watch it and hold onto it while underway. I haven't decided on sonar yet, just not sure if I care or why.
