R6 Sof Trac Failing

Post by dgangwer »

I thought I would get seagrass but my wife liked Sof Trac at the boat show. Paid the premium and got Sof Trac stem to stern.
The boat has been mostly dry stacked but sat in my driveway for the last week. When I hopped on today to take it to its new dry stack home in VA, here's what I found:

Numerous edges pulled back and deformed lines in the material. I've had the boat three months.

We have the snap in soft mats and have had no problems in 2+ seasons.

Does it look like a material shrinkage problem?

Should be under warranty.

Thanks for the replies. It does appear to be drawing-in (shrinkage) and the adhesive is letting go on the edges. My last boat was a carpeted Sea Ray and I didn't have any problems.

Even if it is under warranty, I wonder if the next iteration would do the same thing? Does anyone have bare fiberglass deck? I'll send pics to the dealer and see what they say.

I've had the soft trac mat on my swim platform for 3 seasons and almost 200hrs on the boat now. Mine still looks great. The vendor probably just had a bad run of material.

Ditto, I have seadek on my boat for 3 years and no issues.
My brother has an R5 with swim platform factory done with no issues (2016).
Seems to be a lot of people having this issue on the R5 and R8, at this point it is likely a known issue at cobalt and they should be having the dealer fix it.
You should be able to use acetone to clean the floor and on the mat to rengage the stickiness. But it obviously won't fish the "shrinking" issue.

Mine is doing EXACTLY the same thing. Dealer is working it out with Cobalt and I'm hoping this will be covered under warranty.

My R6 soft trac is failing on the transom. Bringing it in to the dealer tomorrow. He said they'd first try re-gluing it, and if that didn't work they'd file a warranty claim to have it replaced.

Did the dealer install? It seems that the nubs weren't ground off before the install.

We had a small problem with an air bubble under our Sof Trac but I used a syringe to pop it. Problem gone.

Are they still using marine mat? I can't believe all the problems they are having with this.
Maybe they need to switch mfg.
I ordered an R7 with no flooring and used seadek and after a year had one little corner coming up. They told me to put acetone on it and the surface and push it back down. It worked great. I installed myself and couldn't have been easier.
That also looks very thin compared to what I put down.

Dealer re-glued, and it looks as good as new. Hoping it stays that way. The soft-trac came with the boat as new, so it wasn't dealer installed but rather factory installed.

I think when the season wraps I'll write a longer post about my experience with the R6 surf. I love the boat and the wave is way better than my friend's 2019 R5 surf (IMHO), but lots of little problems through the year. Hoping all the kinks are worked out now.

Thanks for the update.
Others here with a surf series will be interested in your experiences. Again feel free to upload a pic or two of your R6 and surf wave when you post the write up.

I once bought a used Nissan Armada to pull our boat one season. It was the first year they made the Armada, I think 2004. It had so many minor but annoying problems that I can't remember them all. A lot had to do with electrical: lights, windshield washer, windows, gas sending unit, and so on.
Future Armadas did not have the same problems.

Hopefully, Cobalt will improve the R6.

My old Cobalt dealer mentioned that it does come up after some time if exposed to the elements, and would likely need to be re-glued periodically. I saw it on a handful of older Cobalts when I bought mine, and opted to just get the seagrass.

That said, none of them looked like the photos above, where the material itself appears to be shrinking or deteriorating. That strikes me as a warranty replacement.
