The way I have handled this since I have owned the boat is to turn the engine off, then immediately turn the ignition back to "On". This allows me to trim the outdrive but it also restarts the Garmins. I have two concerns with that, first is I hate to cycle them needlessly and put unneeded wear and tear on those units. Secondly, since they take some time to boot up, the trim indicator on the Garmin screen is unavailable. I realize I can see the trim indicator on the backup Volvo display. It just seems like there should be a better way.

I completely forgot about this…..The Merc throttle has a separate trim switch underneath the throttle dedicated to raising the outdrive while the key is OFF. It’s called the trailer trim switch. Not sure how your VP set up is rigged since you haven’t posted a pic but it might be worth a look.

Volvo has just 1 switch. Push it up and it goes up. They are not like a Merc.
.
That’s what I’ve always known as well especially on the Kiekhaefer setups but have not seen the newest offerings (2022) from VP.
Figured it may be worth mentioning.

On my mercruiser control, I use the engine on/off button to stop the engine. That way the key stays on so I can trim my drive.

Current Mercruisers don't use the separate trailer switch...there is just one trim up and down.
