Hear you on the heavier boat. I will also be using my boat in choppy coastal conditions and opted for a heavier boat for that reason among others. Re the surcharge, I don’t think it’s negotiable. Cobalt sent a letter to all dealers about this. I have seen it. Wouldn’t blame you for cancelling if it was added after you struck a deal, but it’s applicable to all new builds after (I think) Oct 20.

Thank you. I posted more pics on this forum viewforum.php?f=47 if you are interested. She has some warts, but well worth the effort and risk. The navy hull and red boot stripe are classic. The twin engine 296 starts at 8700 lbs dry. With fuel, water, passengers and cargo, we'll be nearly 10,000 lbs on most trips, enough to push back a bit on the LI Sound chop.

The new Cobalts are gorgeous, but pricing is plain out of control. They have few if any boats to sea trial, and it would have been nice to know an approx delivery date. The surcharge will slow things down a bit and knock a few customers off the line.

Bad news for most who have not ordered yet and cant find existing inventory...
just placed my R6 order today. 5% manufacturer surcharge due to higher material costs.. (metals components are 200% up last 12 months see https://fortune.com/2021/07/08/steel-pr ... up-bubble/ + Gel Coat is up 90% due to higher oil prices. )
But worse of all. Dealer discounts are lower than before.. I was quoted 16 k in discounts on an R6 back in August - down to 6k now.
The factory has a reason to increase prices. Dealers are just being opportunistic given the demand increase for boats and lower inventory
If you find existing inventory - just grab it.. prices are just going to continue going up

Carilope: agree with all that. i saw the letter cobalt sent to its dealers. It’s an 8 percent surcharge. If they are only hitting you for 5 that’s obviously better, but wonder if that’s just a bit of a shell game they are playing with surcharge versus msrp (ie, the reduced msrp discount they gave).

Did the letter say surcharge for all orders going forward, or was it applied to all orders for 2022? I ordered in September and wondering if I'll get a message from my dealer.

For all boats delivered after December 21, 2021 the 8 percent surcharge applies. However, if the boat was sold (not just agreed to but actually showing sold in their system) prior to the date of the letter, October 20 2021, the surcharge will only be 3 percent. Now this is a lot more understandable. I know our purchasing dept has been taking a big hit even more so than when this thread started. I would really like to see the letter.

A bit off topic, but just cancelled my R8 Outboard order for a few reasons. Main reason was there was not even a hint as to when it would be delivered. Next was the fact I was nervous the R8 was a bit too small and light for the sea conditions encountered on the Long Island Sound. There is no inventory around to test the boat and I was not making a $250k bet that I would like how she rode.
We found a 2013 Cobalt 296 that needed a bit of work. I will be all in, with all work done, fully serviced and in the water for 1/3 the price of the new boat. And I will have a boat for April. The 296 is 2,000 lbs heavier and foot wider than the R8, so the ride should be better. If she doesn't work out, the big money is out of it and a resale should not be that difficult. Here she is this past week right before the sea trial.
And- if my dealer tried to add a surcharge, I would have cancelled anyway.

Thank you. Even with all the issues, it was a painful decision. I believe I got lucky with the 296. Only time will tell if the ecstasy is greater than the agony when I start digging into it late this week.

I spoke with our local Cobalt dealer that we have our order with that the boat is supposed to be coming in by end of year. They did confirm that there is a surcharge but did not confirm the amount. However with that said they would honor our pricing and not increase the price of the boat and it would be absorbed. Good to know that not only have they been great during the sale that they are backing it up after the sale.

I reached out to my rep last night for my order with an est delivery of Feb 2022 and he echoed what garttx sales rep said. Confirmed that there's a surcharge but my deal won't be affected.
