I guess they have calculated it's cheaper to deal with it when it happen's vs issue a recall to fix it? It sounds like Merc has a solution for it.
In the end we’re in a world run by accountants and lawyers. So I wouldn’t expect any support from cobalt until the ROI favors correcting the problem instead of bandaid solutions. Or until they piss off the wrong person with deep enough pockets to lawyer up.

Re: Another victim of hydrolocking
Ok the bad thing is Cobalt doesn't like Merc so they don't even offer the B4 in the surf line. This would take all worries away!
Again Cobalt dealers don't push Merc anymore. Again would solve this issue. Yes new technology is great with volvo But! You want hydrolock or reliability?
Just more stuff to think about!
Any body say BigBlock

I totally agree! I didn't mean to sound flippant. I'm sure it's frustrating, I hate that it's going to be in the back of my mind every time I take our boat out. I hope you get it resolved soon.MisterScott wrote: Thu Jun 16, 2022 7:16 am I don’t hope for the best when i plop down more than $200k for a boat. Sorry. Hope is not a strategy at this price point.

I don't know why Volvo just didn't add exhaust flappers? I'm not a engineer but sure would seem like the smart thing to do.

Are the flappers internal within the risers, or are you talking about the external flappers on thru-hull exhaust.Big Block Power wrote: Thu Jun 16, 2022 3:45 pm It's in the back of my mind everytime I slow down for the last 5 years.

If they’re internal it’s possible that merc has that tech patented.

Re: Another victim of hydrolocking
Well, quick update here. The dealership informed that it was NOT a hydro lock issue. Their field service indicated that. Not sure what they did, but the boat is now back in their shop and currently getting a new long block. My guess is it dropped a valve. Maybe it was a combination of both. The dealership did say, before the new long block determination that Volvo has a new ECU flash that is supposed to help prevent the hydro locking issues. Relates to how the motor comes off higher rpm’s when the throttle is chopped. More updates as events warrant.

I'm not mechanical at all, so please forgive my ignorance, but would that relate to the recall they had issued?

No not a Recall if it didn't have anything to do with emissions. And not really safety related.dsthomas wrote: Tue Jul 05, 2022 8:30 am I'm not mechanical at all, so please forgive my ignorance, but would that relate to the recall they had issued?
They are retarding the timing I'm sure on decel.

Yep. Trying to keep more back pressure through the exhaust. Doubt it will do much though.

Re: Another victim of hydrolocking
My thought as well. Fundamentally a exhaust manifold design issue. If they had stones they’d put flapper valves in. Wonder if Merc’s could be retrofitted?tomace13 wrote: Tue Jul 05, 2022 8:04 pmBig Block Power wrote: Tue Jul 05, 2022 12:34 pmNo not a Recall if it didn't have anything to do with emissions. Something tells me we'll see flapper valves in Volvo Penta exhausts in a year or two - just remains to be seen whether they can be retrofit to current boats.

That depends on if merc has a patent for that design.jhnmdahl wrote: Fri Jul 08, 2022 8:22 pm Something tells me we'll see flapper valves in Volvo Penta exhausts in a year or two - just remains to be seen whether they can be retrofit to current boats.
