I should’ve clarified that it is always stuck in the same position driving or sitting.

.
So glad you found us Brettrina.

Normally this can happen while cruising and you hit something like a submerged piece of wood 🪵. A small chunk will jam in the tiny hole on the front of your outdrive. Your Speedo works by receiving water pressure while underway into that small hole which causes air pressure to compress a diaphragm which in turn moves your speedometer needle.

If something gets lodged into that outdrive hole it will keep the pressure on that diaphragm until you dislodge the offender.

Get a small pick tool or paper clip and see if something is blocking the small hole.

Hope this helps.

Any pics?

And welcome aboard mate.

Thx for the response. This particular boat has twin Volvo 8.1l engines. The boat is new to me so I am learning as I go. I also have an older 220, which has a hose and plastic device mounted next to the out drive. Given the two engines, would a similar device exist on the 302?

I will post some pictures once I get it cleaned up.
Thx again

Yes it would.
We had a Volvo Penta two boats ago and yes, the pitot tubes are mounted externally. Check the opening for anything that may have been struck and jammed into the hole.
