Post by andymoler58 »

I was going to look at a boat tomorrow but was wondering if you think the engine will be underpowered

Is it a VP Gen V? Should be fine. I have a R5 and a 350 and I get 53 ish light loaded. The GenV's have a wide torques range and a DP gives a great bite to the water.

What altitude will you be using it at? I have a 350HP Mercruiser at Lake Tahoe 6200 feet on an R5. It's not a speed demon since I have to prop down but completely adequate.

I have the prior generation engine, which is a V8-300 de-tuned by limiting throttle response above 4000rpm (the V8-225) paired with the DP outdrive, and it has lots of torque for my 210 which is about 500lbs lighter than an R3. I've added an arch and a second battery and some other "weighty" options to my 210, so it's probably single-digit percentage difference in weight. It's about 5mph slower on top than a V8-300 in the same boat, but has the same pull getting up past 40mph.

With the Gen 4 engines I used to say to look at the displacement and number of cylinders as well as the other stats, but the Gen 5 have variable valve timing that make smaller V8s perform like larger displacement engines from Gen 4.

In short, it'll be fine for towing and cruising around, unless you like to spend a lot of time near wide open throttle.

We have R3 with the 300 HP Volvo Penta. The only problem I've had is people making fun of my small block on this website.
We've pulled tubers and skiers. It's quick on plane and will go as fast as we care to go. I've never even tried the top end speed.

Fully agree Krob.
