Trim Control

Getting acquainted with our new to us 2017 A25. Question about the Trim Control. Moving from a Yamaha outboard with a Trim gauge that was either all the way down or all the way up or some point in between.

Our present gauge measure in degrees, and there are multiple Setting buttons on the Trim Control: Cruise, Trailering, and Trim assist. There is also a ‘+ or -‘ option.

The Trim button seems to stop at about 36°. Is this normal? Which setting should we be in during normal Cruising? How should we use the other settings? Not finding much information in the Owners Manual. Thanks.

Normally I get on plane with the outboard trimmed all the way down. Once on plane you can slightly higher . The boat's hull is more out of the water that results in less drag to improve speed and reduce fuel consumption. if you trim up too high them the boat will be past the point the prop can hold and it will slip causing a reduction in speed, maybe rpm's will increase due to slip and the nose could start dropping. My boats never had set points and just use the trim button and go by how the boat is tracking. The trim gauge is good for reference but normally the motor moves faster than the gauge so it is always lagging.
The trailer position is used when hauling the boat to prevent damage.

Without more information about the relevant conditions, that question is impossible to answer.

As a rule of thumb, I trim up until the boat starts porpoising, then trim back until it stops.

Agreed. I would have posted that but I can't spell porpoising correctly. According to my spell checker, it's not even a word.
Another thing I've noticed, small turns change the angle enough to slow the porpoising down.

BTW, do you trim up/down into chop while cruising? I had been taught to trim down. Then saw a video lesson with two experts who trimmed up into chop. That works far better for me -- smoother ride and less spray. But that might be because my boat is heavy and deep.

I usually keep the trim around 6 degrees or under unless the lake is pretty calm. Then I might go up to 20 degrees or so, but trim down on wakes to avoid "porpoising". If by chop, you're referring to what others have described as washing machine, I just try to power through it. I try trimmin up and see how it goes this weekend.
