trailer set up R5

Post by JimGilly »

Anyone able to tell me what distance apart to locate the bunks on a new trailer? I understand this measurement is only a start point, and some fine tuning will be required once out of the water measurements can be made. Just need a safe starting point.

@JimGilly - you can send an email request to Cobalt and they will give you the drawings for your Hull with respect to trailer dimensions
dwightmc AT CobaltBoats DOT COM
see here viewtopic.php?t=6666 for example of what you will receive

Then - see my thread in the Towing sub-forum for some tips on set-up
viewtopic.php?t=7055

Using the Template method I only had very minor adjustments at the front of the forward bunks and the rear 4 were all spot-on both front and rear.
So out of 12 mounting brackets I only required two with a minor adjustment.
I can sincerely recommend making a template, it will really make things a lot easier for you over the piece.

Not sure if the other posts answered the mail here, but wanted to follow-up with my R5 trailer measurements, pics, and drawing.

The bunkers are 2x6s. Measurements were taken from the inside of the bunkers. The carpeting over the bunkers adds about 0.25" Drawing is not to scale ;)

Hope this helps!

Inner Bunkers:
  • Front: 8"
  • Rear: 17"
  • Length: 155"
Outer Bunkers:
  • Front: 40"
  • Rear: 43"
  • Length: 69"

@tdryan - that is a great service you provided
Can I suggest you also add to your drawing, the relative positions of the bunks to an axle
i.e. Rearmost of the bunks (both forward and rear sets) perpendicular to the center of rear axle.
And finally bow roller to the centerline of rear axle and height of center of roller to the frame, to set up the winch
Those would give a good overall guide for position of all the key components

Sure, I'll pull together some additional data points. My trailer is stored offsite, so it'll be a few days before I'll have the opportunity to gather the data. Standby...

Pulled together an updated diagram. Again, not to scale. I need to go back and verify the 207". If it's off, it's only < 4". Is this what you're looking for? Anything else?

Great job @tdryan - I didn't need it personally, but from my own trailer set-up experience, those additional dimensions are just as important as the original drawing you provided. But now that I think about it, the relative heights of inner and outer bunks would also be required; ideally would need these with respect to the axle - you can't really use the cross-members to which the bunk brackets are attached, because these may vary in design from one trailer brand to another. The angle of the bunks is another thing but the easy way around that, especially on an aluminum trailer with bolt on brackets, would be to use swivel plates for the bunks.
So I see you are in WA - where are you? I'm over on the Key Peninsula, on the Case Inlet side.
