Marine versus Teak Oil

Post by Kate »

Anybody have experience using "Sikkens Cetol Marine Wood Finish?" I've been using their teak oil, but mistakenly bought the Marine.

Strange thing happened: Lightly sanded and cleaned the teak (per usual). Applied the Marine (per usual). Next day, strange "splotches" appeared all over the wood. Not bubbles, but splotches. Stranger still, next day those splotches magically disappeared. Applied a second coat of the Marine, and got the same strange reactions.

Any ideas what the heck is going on?

Cat walking on the finished product? Or did something get on the teak after sanding, but before the finishing product, not allowing complete absorption or slower absorption?

My guess is that it's spots that still have more residual teak oil in them and absorb at a different rate. Sikkens products are usually top shelf, and I'm glad it's working out in the end.

". . . absorb at a different rate."

That's my guess. I should have taken the teak down to bare wood, then applied the Marine.

"Cat walking on the finished product?"

Interesting theory -- though no cat-paw evidence on the wood or cats tracking Marine everywhere.

Yea, that was partially a joke. Mainly because that seems to be the answer to any odd happenings around my place. LOL.
I'm glad it's turning out even once completely dry for you.
