Opinion on single engine Cobalt 296

Post by Kmack »

I'm currently in a 2019 R5 with the 380 Volvo. Love everything about the boat. However, we're on Lake of the Ozarks so we get tossed around a bit in the chop. I've started looking at the 296 and have located a few with either the single engine Merc or Volvo. I'm hoping someone on here who owns a 296 with a single would be willing to share their experience.

Rough water ride?
Top speed/cruising speed?
Ability to get on plane with a load?
Occasional watersports, skiing and tubing. Does it come out of the hole ok or struggle?
Merc 502 Mag with 380 hp on a 29 ft boat concerns me but would assume the torque of the big block gets the job done?
Docking. I know it's much easier with twins but is it manageable with a single on the actual 28.5 ft hull length?

Thanks for your feedback!

.
So glad you found us kmack.

I would not recommend a single engine in any cobalt over 26’. Maneuverability and performance will greatly suffer.

And welcome aboard mate.

I have a 380 on my R7 and have no problems. You are talking 2 extra feet so not sure I am the best at answering the question.
Obviously docking in the wind can be some what of an issue. I have heard about aftermarket Bow thrusters for about 10k installed. But this is nothing I have ever felt the need to look into.
