continuous tone on throttle up

Post by kevincs23 »

Good evening all. I am hoping for some advice. I went out in my 2006 226 with Merc 496 bravo 3 for my first long family day on the water today after having my outdrive overhauled over the winter and came across a problem. I have been out for two short days before today, about 6 hours on it since the over haul. I had a couple hours of problem free time this morning then hung out at a beach for an hour or so and went back out.

Upon throttle up to come on plain I had one long continuous tone come from the engine and what seemed be a bit rough running. Come back to idle (still in gear) and the tone would go away after 1-2 seconds. I called my mechanic, he recommended checking for obstructions to the water inlet. I got in and checked, may have knocked off some dirt. Got back in and took off without a problem. then went back to a beach for an hour or so before going back out and the same thing happened. This time I didn't find anything on the water intake and couldn't get it back on plane without the tone and rough running. Running up the rev's in neutral would not repeat the problem.

My mechanic still believes there is an obstruction but I wanted to see if there were any other ideas before I tear into it tomorrow.

All the annual/bi-annual maintenance has been accomplished to include the impeller and fuel/water seperator.

Thanks in advance.

Here is the Mercruiser Horn Warning Systems page that I keep on the boat for troubleshooting:
