2006 272 transom mounted speakers advice

Post by gritz_sea »

I'm considering adding transom mounted 6.5 speakers to our 2006 272 transom (like the pic below) primarily for the purpose of music while swimming/floating, vs watersports. Does anyone have prior experience with this and know what issues I might run into? I could really benefit from knowing the possible speaker depth prior to cutting into the hull. I dont want to cut into the stern storage compartment (under the rear sunpad).

Thank you!

Do you have access underneath there to pull your wires? how are you wiring it into the rest of the system? can you pull that metal plate to take a look in there to see what is behind it or is that thru bolted?

Finding photos of what they do from the factory feels like you're halfway there - I'm sure they picked the locations they did for good reasons.

I wonder if you could see into the opening that the speakers would occupy from below? I'd hate to have to drill holes to get depth measurements.

Mounting depth of JL's M3 in 6.5" diameter is only 2.78", and the 7.7" diameter speakers are 3.17". Their higher end M6 sit a bit deeper, with the 6.5" being 3" deep and the 7.7" at 3.32". I always liked Roswell speakers better, but their 6.5" R1 needs 3" of space and the 7.7" needs 3.42", so they're less flexible. Wet Sounds 6.5" need 2.6", and so are close enough to JL Audio's M3 that you don't really gain much.

Great suggestion - I should have thought to do that -- will try soon.

I know there is access underneath but its a good 2-3 feet back from the stern of the engine, so access would be limited to a long mirror...no way to reach in there.

Also if that's a factory mounting location you may get lucky and have wires from the factory harness in there!

So glad you found us gritz….

Yes that model may have factory wires ran when built. My guess though is that you’re going to have to cut and then fish wire from that end to the hook up location.

And welcome aboard mate.

I went with everything Wet Sounds
8- 6.5" Revo speakers
2- 10" subs
2- 10" Rev10 tower speakers
3- Wet sounds Amps.
All controlled by a Fusion RA670 head unit with 2 wired ERX400 remotes(helm and stern.)
It's insanely loud if you want it to be. The Fusion head unit has my setup divided into zones.
