How does your R5 do with the 300? I am pretty much set on this boat and the 232 is about 500 lbs less dry weight then the R5 I think so I’m curious how she does. This boat I’m looking at does have the 5.7 version of the 300.
Very happy with the 5.7 based VP-300 in my R5. We use it mainly for cruising, no water sports, but it has plenty of power for us. Jumps on plane fast with very little bowrise and runs WOT upper 40's - even with 5ppl onboard I have never felt the need for more power. As far as service and reliability, again pretty pleased - parts are a little more $$ and not as widely available as Mercury, but really not an issue. I do most of my own service and have found the routine maintenance no different than the Mercs - except the water pump impeller which is worlds easier than any of the Mercury engines. As far as the VP duoprop drive, again pleasantly surprised, I think I like it better than my Merc BIII. I've had my R5 a little over a year and while my Mercury based SeaRays were good boats - I put close to 1000hrs on both, I think the R5 with the VP is the best one yet.

Can only figure you will have better performance in the slightly smaller/lighter 232.
Yeah that’s what I figured, it’s just there is always so much talk about the big blocks but this boat is quite a find. Fellow passed away and the widow is selling it an extremely fair price, low hours, always professionally serviced.

We do some water sports with the kids but nothing serious, tubing some wakeboarding and I water ski 3 times a year LOL. Our 200 Sea Ray with a 5.0 mpi and alpha one does well enough so I imagine the duo prop set up alone will be a huge upgrade for that.

Does your Volvo DP make a slight clunk when shifting into gear? The fellow selling it on behalf of this lady said he had it out and he’s used to outboards and wanted to let me know it made a very slight clunk when shifting, I’ve read it’s normal.

Normal to have a slight clunk. Not the same as an outboard that has a dog clutch but still noticeable.

My Mercruiser that has DTS has absolutely no clunk for some reason.

Yes - a clunk when shifting is normal, the way a cone clutch system works. It does shift much smoother than my Merc/Alpha that had a dog style clutch. The newer VPs that have electronic shifting are totally different, almost unnoticeable when shifting.

Well, I’m sure it will be a tremendous amount smoother than my alpha one.

I would not worry about the Volvo or Merccruiser. The 5.3 aluminum block is a GM truck engine that has powered a million GMC/ Chevys over the years. Volvo "marinizes" it with their intake and exhaust and ECUs and sensors but deep down it is a GM truck engine. I have owned two 5.3s in my trucks and put hundreds of thousands of trouble free miles on them. Previous to the Aluminum Engines VP and Merc both sourced GM cast iron blocks and cranks from GM. GM stopped casting iron engines a few years back, and VP went with the aluminnum change , Merc opted to cast their own. As far as I know the Big Block 8.2 Mercs are still Merccruiser produced Chevys. The 4.5 v6 merc a fresh design but still a cast iron. I would not hesitate on the Volvo either 5.7 or 5.3.
