Garmin LakeVu for Lake Tahoe

Post by cvx16 »

Hey all - Apologies if this topic has been covered before or if this belongs in the Electronics forum. Hoping to get some more eyes on it here though.

I'm headed to Lake Tahoe for the first time and was thinking of upgrading my Garmin maps to the latest and greatest. Right now my Garmin 7607 plotters say they have:
- BlueChart US+Canada+Bahamas Detail v2016.51 v18.01
- US LakeVu Detail Map v2016.10 v17.60

Looks like the latest detailed map set from Garmin right now is:
- U.S., West Inland Maps, LakeVü g3 Ultra | LVUS107F
https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/667368/pn/010-D1710-00

Does anyone have this LakeVu g3 Ultra version and have used at Tahoe? Any experience with the Ultra version vs "regular"? Significantly better?

Thanks!

Interested in this, I was just at Tahoe last week and had the old version still. I did get an email and I believe it said you can search places like google maps on the garmin with the update which would be cool. Some of the marinas will show up on the map but restaurants and some marinas (I assume the private ones) don't show up now.

My boat is permanently on Lake Tahoe. What are you looking to gain by getting a different plotter package?

My advice boating at Lake Tahoe. When you are at planing speeds, don't get close to shore. Some areas have rocks that are close to the surface.

The regulations are no wake inside of 600 feet from shore. If you just follow that rule alone, you will be fine.

One cool thing is the garmins actually show you rocks on Tahoe.

For me, I use it mostly for headings. Some places I know by mountains but taking most direct route from say skunk harbor to Gar Woods is nice to have.

Yes they do...but if you stay offshore 600 feet, they never come into play.

I’m closer than 600’ a lot, we like to take swim
breaks and anchor, so, I could navigate with or without the garmins but it’s nice to have. That’s the point.

That's when Gilligan(my wife) gets up on the bow and looks for rocks. Plus...just look at the depth. I don't trust the chart to show all the rocks.

Been boating on Lake Tahoe every single year since 1972 when I was a little kid. Have been good at avoiding rocks so far.

Right. Not to be 100% trusted from hitting a rock because they move all the time. Updated charts are how the big boy boats have navigated in the last few decades, while I’m not sure why you are against them (or one screen) the point of the OP was, is it worth the update, my answer is yes. Seems to be a common thread with mr Tahoe to be negative.

Tahoe won't have updated charts. If they do, it won't be the rocks. You are right...rocks don't move. They will be at the same position as the present charts.

In case you haven't noticed, I am against spending $200 for one lake. If the OP plans on going to many lakes, maybe the $200 is worth it. That's up to him.

Thanks all for the replies. Sounds like what I have is probably sufficient. We haven't been to Lake Tahoe before, so just wondered if anyone found any must-haves in the new maps package. Doesn't sound like it. Thanks for saving me $200! :D
