Past Owner, looking to be an owner again

Post by Macjazzy »

Hello everyone, great forum seems to be very active and full of Cobalt fans and information. Excited to find this place on the web.

I bought a 1996 190 new in the fall of 1996. The second boat I had owned at that point and first boat I bought new. I really loved that boat, sold it because I had 2 foot itis, as they say. Thought I needed a bigger boat. Have had several boats since then, some really great ones. Formula 330ss, great boat, crappy ride, 33' Powerplay Sport deck. big power, over 100mph boat. They have a rabid following as well in the "cigarette boat" world. It was fun but maintenance on 800hp engines is brutal. Currently have a Nor Tech 340 Sport with triple 300's I love this boat, but as I get older I always come back to my Cobalt as the most fun to run and own.

Mine had a Volvo 5.0 190hp ford 302 engine. I swapped props and did some adjustment to the timing and carb and it ran a best of 54mph. I always thought the hull could handle more speed though.

Starting to look for another 190 and found this website. So thanks for letting me in. Looking forward to reading up on all the vast amount of knowledge here.

Sounds like some fun boats - Nor Tech with 3 300's that's a big girl! I am a fairly recent Cobalt owner - a SeaRay convert - I love my R5. I see you are in MD, assume on the bay -- I think I would be looking at one of the Cobalt outboards for that area.

Yes on the bay, I am not replacing my Nor-Tech looking for something fun to run around the river on. I ran my Nor-Tech about 80 miles round trip on the Bay last Saturday. I am too old to make runs like that in a 19 foot boat.

I want another 190 because I remember how well it ran, how nimble and fast the hull was, and I am in a position in life now that I can afford a second boat, but I would rather have something completely different than my main boat. So this will be my fun boat! My plan is to build a nice LS motor for it. Something in the 350-400hp range. Mostly because it would almost be hard to build a LS with much less than that. I think a 190 will handle 60-65 mph speeds. It won't be as fast as my bigger boat, or the last few boats, but it should be a blast to drive in calm protected water at that speed. And it will shock a lot of boats when I blast by at that speed.

So glad you found us Mj...

Those are some nice boats in your repertoire. Any pics?

The 190 is a great machine. Some would say the finest to ever come out of the Cobalt world headquarters in Neodesha. I put the 262/263 and 343 above it but that's just my opinion.

And welcome aboard mate!
