Cobalt 262/263 steering cable replacement

Post by AsLan7 »

.
For those who have a 2000-2007 262 or 263 model Cobalt and have had your power steering cable start to get old and freeze up, then this post is for you.

Our power steering symptom of turning the wheel which eventually becomes more and more difficult over time leans toward a bad cable.

After disconnecting the cable from the outdrive and seeing that the outdrive moves freely as well as good power steering fluid and no belt slippage only leaves the cable to blame.

The 262/263 takes an 18’ cable. The pic is the part number and the vid is the old cable pulled out of the boat showing it won’t move freely.

Thanks for this, I am pretty sure this is my next project!
Does anyone have any sources or other topics on how to access the path for the steering cable? I don't know how to get the cushions out and I do not appear to be smart enough to search this site properly.

You do not need to pull out the cushions.
It disconnects from the steering wheel underneath the dash and at the transom. Then it’s pulled aft thru the engine bay. Attach the new one to the old one as you fish it through.
