are battery tenders worth it

Post by brandboat23 »

For winter non use time, should i disconnect batteries in full and then hook up battery tenders to both of my battiers, or just disconnect batteries and leave them disconnected all winter.

I am hearing different feedback, if the batteries are disconnected you dont need Battery tenders. If the batteries are connected you need battery tenders.

If the batteries have a disconnect switch, that works although I still use a battery charger that keeps the batteries floated all winter.

". . .battery tenders to both of my battiers . . ."

If left in the boat, not a fan. Some units have shorted/overheated and caused a fire.

I just turn the switch off. Never had an issue. Worst case, use a trickle charge for a couple of hours in the spring.

Yes, battery tenders are worth it for keeping your batteries fully charged and preventing degradation during winter storage, especially if they remain connected.

My "summer" car is stored in my garage, and left on a battery tender all winter. For the boat that is stored away from home, I pull the batteries at the end of the season and put them on a battery tender in the basement. I'm not sure how much storing them indoors instead of letting them freeze outdoors all winter may extend their life, but they were certainly completely dead each spring before I started bringing them in each winter.

I always pull my batteries out of the boat and put them on a tender and store in my garage. I have found that you get many years out of the battery’s.

Battery maintainers on everything as well. I added the charger/maintainer to my boat when I ordered it, and plug it in after every use, and then pull the batteries and maintain them in winter.

I have a lawn mower battery that is going on close to 10 years because I plug it in after every use as well.
