What is the advantage of the SS water pumps over the factory (brass or aluminum?) ?

They can be serviced. OEM brass material is a soft metal, so sand, debris etc. "eat up" the metal when sucked into the pump. Hardin marine builds them out of SS and they have inserts front and back of impeller (when worn can be changed). Hardin sells service kits. They are better built them OEM - larger bearings, SS internals, robust impeller by the look of it. That being said - both of my pumps started expel water through the weep holes (they are less then a year old and less then 100 hours used. I've send then to the manufacturer and they promptly shipped refurbished ones back under warranty. I am upset as I had to pay to remove/install second time. I was hoping they would last for a long time but..... sigh.....

Well, they looked good... NEW. Not so much now that they have some hours on them. Hopefully you just got a couple of bad ones, but if you get another batch, I'd be concerned with how well the actual stainless steel was worth the "upgrade" price. Again, I hope I'm wrong, and you get fixed up and are on your way.
Great looking boat, by the way, and looks like you really care to keep her in tip top shape.

It almost looks like your didn't seal properly? From a little poking around, it looks like others have had mixed results with those pumps too. Solidly built, but some engineering flaws here and there that contribute to various issues. See:
