R30 vs R31

Post by cobaltwinni »

I have a 2015 R7 and have had a great experience with it. I am considering upsizing to the R30 (apparently this is the last year of production) or R31. I'm interested in feedback anyone who has considered these two, or has spent time in the R30 (or R31, though it is a new model). In particular, how is the ride quality in rougher water. Thanks in advance.

I was in a R30SC last month in Naples and it is a beauty. The Gulf was very calm so I can’t comment on how it handles rough water but the few boat waves we encountered it handled with ease. I’m now starting to see more and more Cobalts with outboards down here in FL compared to 5 years ago.

An R30 has a 21 degree hull angle and weighs 8800lbs with twin engines, and an R31 has the same 21 degree hull angle but weighs 9500lbs dry. Pretty good chance there will be a modest but noticeably better ride in the R31 in choppy water.

I'm sure I'll be debating this very question on a lightly used version of each in about 3-4 years.

I think the biggest difference right now will be the price. I'm guessing the R31 may run you another $100k?

I would probably go with the R30 for now. I generally think its not advisable to purchase the first year of a new model......of anything really. There will be issues to be worked out on that R31 is my guess. For the price tag I'd prefer to not be in the beta group.
