222 speed at WOT (Bravo 3)

Post by DocKins »

Good afternoon! My wife and I are currently in the process of purchasing our first boat. We found a 1994 Cobalt 222 that is in amazing condition. Really, it does not look it's age at all. It has a 7.4 Mercruiser with a Bravo 3. We took it for a lake test today. At WOT the boat was showing 50MPH (GPS), which surprised me a bit. I figured the 7.4 would push that boat a bit faster than 50MPH. Is that speed to be expected or could something be up with the engine or props? There were five people on board (3 adults and 2 kids) and about half a tank of fuel. I forgot to note the RPM while at WOT but I believe it was right around 5k. I was told the engine had recently been rebuilt. Thanks!

So glad you found us DK…

You are right in the correct speed range with a counter rotating outdrive prop setup and 7.4 engine. They are built for hole shot but sacrifice top end speed.

Any pics?

And welcome aboard mate.

That looks really clean - congrats on a great boat!

Keep in mind that 7.4L is about 300hp max, and not as efficient or flat in torque as today’s engines. The hull also weighs more than most 22’ boats, likely just a bit over 3500lbs before fueling up. It’s a good boat, though, as reflected by the number of them still on lakes.
