AJ, let me rephrase.
IMO, I’m sure Cobalt or any other builder will give their dealers a certain amount of floor time. Probably 1-3 months would be a good guess. After that, a dealership had better be liquid enough to pay the bills. Some boats sit for a year or two, and the dealerships ability to not cave in tells me that they have no pressure and really could care less if it sits..
That tells me there is no floor plan debt pressure to deal with, which makes for a healthy business.

I see the pressure thing and agree with what u say.

Floor plan lending in the auto field is that a bank lends 100% on the cost of the vehical and requires only interest payments. Theybdo that because they have ageeements with the mfg that they will take back the auto if they go belly up.

Not sure if this is how the boat biz works but I would guess so.

Also, there is one little exception in the Cobalt territory rule.
Like you AJ, if you have a lake home address somewhere outside/different than your main home address dealership territory, I can’t see how the lake home territory dealership can refuse you the sale. Their sales territory is supposedly more about dividing a service territory, not a sales territory. So if you boat at address number 2, they can not refuse the sale.

So although you live in Columbus OH, you should be able to buy a new boat in NY at our Lake Chautauqua dealership..which may never return a phone call, but you will deal with a bunch of really good guys who will cut you a deal and give good service🤣

So are you guys saying that if I found a good deal at a dealer in CA, for example, they might not sell to me because there's a dealer in AZ?

They definitely won't sell it to you.
You would have to go through your local dealer to make the transaction possible. Then of course, your local dealer adds his cut and then there is shipping. So by the time everyone involved gets their share, the deal is no longer good.
They do have a little racket going.

Yes I believe I saw that one before as well. It would need a different trailer of course and I’m sure your wife would like the color.

Mxboy, take a look at this 2013 Cobalt Boats 232. Very nice with a 300hp engine in it and only 40 hours. I bought my 220 from this dealer in July. I think that price would be very negotiable.

Wow, I figured it would be like car dealers where they don't care where you are from. Guess not!

Does anyone know if Malibu boats has the same dealer sales business model as Cobalt ? If not, they most likely will change Cobalt’s “dealer exclusivity”
sales process.

Malibu just had another record first quarter. They desire to integrate many of their same practices into Cobalt.

Cobalt’s sales methods and customer relations seem broken and antiquated to me. Time for a change.

Yes and no A7... I guess it has its benefits and pitfalls.

Yes, it closes dealer competition against one another for the same sale, and it costs the customer more due to the fact that the price is the price, and,if you want it, this is what it’s going to cost.

No, because it totally stabilized used Cobalt prices and allows the buyer to retain more resale value.
If new boats become cheaper, the bottom obviously drops out of used values.
I doubt we will see open competition on Cobalt boats. I can tell you for a fact that a 2-4 year old Cobalt retails for more than the dealer cost of a brand new identical Cobalt.

The only thing that will keep a dealer honest is they have to know that the customer will walk.

Malibu follows this as well but if it's a year old you can sell to anyone.

Not sure I'm a fan of this boat. The dash looks like they were cutting corners. And the cup holder cuts over into the Captians leg room making it seem cramped.
